3.4 alternator swap but still getting voltage light

I have a 98 3.4 230,xxx miles original alternator, battery charging light started coming on intermittent then stayed on, I swapped alternator last night light went off...driving to work about 20 miles down road voltage light is back on. Ground and connections all seemed good (what other connections should I check) would there be a voltage regulator or something else.

did a little checking anyone have idea for next step?

I went out and put voltmeter on it, I'm getting 12.x volts at the battery and when started...checked Alt only putting out 12.x should be getting high 13 to 14v but it never changes either at the battery or alt.

shouldn't the alt measture out at 13.x or 14v?

You sure your battery's still good and not loading your alternator?
You sure alternator you put in is also good?

I have charging system explained on my thread. It's for 22RE but concept should be same as for 3.4.

"B" (thick white wire) is alt to battery wire. You should get 13.5-14.5 Volts there. Little, momentary fluctuation is OK but if voltage there gets out of that range continuously, you'll get charge error light. So looks like charge error light is doing its job.

Thin red "IG" wire provides excitation for alternator. There should be 12V there coming from Engine fuse.

Guys,
While I'm here, if you've had experience with replacement 22RE (rebuilt or OEM from Toyota), please share your experience on this thread.

Red face

Just where did this second alternator come from?/

All the connections tight and clean on the alternator and battery terminals not cracked or broken

Is the belt tight enough it didn`t loosen on you did it??

I'm gonna chime in with Wyoming9. A loose alternator belt can cause this problem. I don't know about your model, but on the 22RE, it's a complete pain in the ass to tighten the belt. Also, if you have a new belt, it's gonna stretch out after a week or so, and you'll have to re-tighten.

belt is good and tight I don't have have lbs checker but will tighten up a little more just to be safe, pretty easy on these, I just checked with everything off drawing 12.5v at the battery and then at the alternator same thing.

Had wife start it up dropped down to 12.36 measuring the same at the battery and the alternator...I think it has to be bad alternator had her bring it up to about 2k no change in the voltage at the alternator.

I checked on a Denso would be 5-7 days to get, this was from a local parts/chain been around since 1930's they usually carry good stuff....this was an MPA alternator, not first choice but seemed better than autozone/advanced.
