Another car alarm/remote starter thread

Im in the market for one. The last thread I read mentioned the viper and the ultra4500 (or something like that)
Any suggestions as to any other models?
pros, cons on the ones you guys have now?
where is the best place to get one from?

ill probably just go to best buy to have it put in. Its too cold now to do it myself.

TIA

The Viper 550 ESP is a one way starter/alarm.
If you like 2-way then look at the Viper 790XV......quite a sweet setup.

shazaam 01-05-2004 12:49 PM

If your going to have someone put it in go to tweeter, they will give you a lifetime warranty at no extra cost. Bestbuy charges and its only 4 yrs

sabre 01-05-2004 01:05 PM

i dont have a tweeter. or at least i dont think i do. are they a chain?

why do I need a 2 way? whats the advantages of it? just cooler looking?

justinh 01-05-2004 01:37 PM

tweeter= Hi Fi Buys....i recently had the 2way Viper set up installed there and it was onsale for $399 installed...it was like $100 off or something...i like it alot except the remote is really big but the newest model comes with a normal sized remote without the LCD display and i am looking into getting that.

shazaam 01-05-2004 01:44 PM

Their putting in the new two way in mine. It still has an LCD, its just smaller. Also the buttons are recessed inside the unit, so you don't keep locking/unlocking your dooes when the keys are in your pocket.

The advantage of the two way is that when the alarm is triggered the remote starts beeping and vibrating, so that you know too that the alarm is going off ... and yeah b/c it looks cooler

Sabre - love the avatar needs to be closer and bigger and clearer .. in that order

Also if you use the remote start feature, you know when the car is running (no need to see).

I purchased mine last year $500 installed. It started acting up around november, and then it just stopped working completely two weeks ago. So after some threats .. they admitted that people have been having problems with this model, thats why they're coming out with a new one. So they agreed to pull out the old system and install the new one.

yeah post a big pic of her ... and her sister too!

Yes it is. I like it alot but I have yet to have it long enough to expose any problems with the system. I have yet to read anything bad about the alarm I chose but time will tell.

I would have gone for the 2 way but the remote was too bulky for my wife.

I forgot what problem you had with yours, but it is tough to say what happened with the system without looking at it (ie if it was the brain unit, a relay or a fuse....maybe a wire came loose.....who knows). I know mine pretty well so if something does go wrong I will know right away what part is faulty.

The new 2-way version may have similar problems, if there are any, just because it is so new but hopefully they have worked all the bugs out before you get your new one.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with yours.

On some of the 2-ways, the head unit has an input for a temperature sensor. That serves three purposes, 1) to let the head unit make a determination on if it needs to run the heater or not, 2) to let teh head unit decide if it should auto-start the car 'cause it's so friggin' cold, and (the cool part) 3) it can send the temp back to the keyfob so you can see just how cold it is. :)

The Commando FM-870 is one such system:

Why such a discrepancy in price? $500 installed as opposed to $160 for the unit.

The key chain lcd looks rather large. Anyone have this one?

cruizin01 01-06-2004 06:04 AM

I just picked up a CrimeStopper alarm but havent got it installed yet. I didn't get the remote start option on mine but they do have some with it. All the equipment I got looks to be of good qaulity it says "designed and engineered in the USA" whether that means anything or not. They have a good TechWeb site, it has factory wire colors and what not. You can pick up most of there models on ebay for about 1/3 of retail. I payed 75 bucks for the alarm and a power door lock kit, the alarm itself retails for like $180

The unit that is $160 from Viper is not a two-way nor does it have a display on the remote.

The two way unit without install is $400

I got mine for $140 but I have seen it for as low as $120 on ebay.
A viper 790XV 2-way sells for about $170 to 200 without install.
There are a few on eBay right now.

They do charge a ton for installation as you can see in the price discrepancy.
