whinch ?

ok im looking at a possible whinch and was wondering a few things .
i know u get what u pay for and all that but canadain tire has a winch on for 399 its a 8000lb winch made by champion power equipment . any body have any experience with this company ? and my main question is ,is a 8000lb winch enough for a second gen 4 runner will it do the job ?
im not worried if its slow i got the time i just dont want a under powered winch to let me down . heres a link

not much info on the champion web site

The only rule I know for winches is twice your gvwr is a good number. or twice your max weight would be on the trail, and also realize that the 8000 lb rating is on the top layer of cable/rope, on most winched they have less pulling power if I remember my reading. never had one though. never had the money, always more important things to fix on the rig. maybe some day

Good winch, cable speed is a bit slow but so far I havnt heard of any blowing up, frying or anything, the fairlead is pretty wussy, and the buttons on the controllers fall out from what ive heard but they still work fine without them.

If your going to buy it get it at Costco, they have a sweet return policy if it does happen to break. Im looking into one for my '83 myself, my brother has been running one for the past 3 years and it gets beat on, still works good.

thanx for the replys hoping to hear more .

now if it was weak ,a snatch block would help out would it not i read it doubles the winch power ?

i have been using a 2 ton come along and a 30 foot tow strap to get me outa trouble . 2 ton aint much had a hard time last i used it plus it takes more work then i would like .lol. but it has saved me many times cant complain.

it does help out, but it requires more cable. So 100ft cable run through a snatch block and back to the truck would effectively be only 50ft usable cable. And thats not even right, since you need at least 5 wraps or more on the winch drum.

IMHO, a winch should be considered a life/death device. Be sure to do LOTS of research, this is NOT a device you can have fail!

Keep in mind that the amount of rope on the drum is how far you can winch the truck without having to reset the anchor end. I can't think of a single instance where you would have to move the truck over 50'. Extensions, tow straps, etc can be used to make up the length difference if the anchor is further away.

Yes, you get more power on the last layer of the rope.

Yes, a snatch block can double the effective pulling power if the rope is attached back to your vehicle. The tradeoff is the linespeed is cut in half.

I know everyone says "give so and so a chance"

but a recent test of winches by a mag confirmed that name brand (specifically Warn) winches, really ARE made better/stronger.

I'd save up, and get a good brand name winch. I prefer warn. I've got an M8000, but if I had the cash, I'd get a powerplant dual force.

www.winchdepot.com has easily the best prices.

So are we to assume that you're wheeling by yourself ?

Id say you will be fine with the Champion, I havnt heard of one failing yet and lots of people run them around here. If you are worried, buy it at Costco so you can return it no questions asked and carry a tow rope and your come-along set up as backup if your wheeling by yourself.

Heres an article about them:

yea im wheeling by myself as in only one truck the one im in, dont know any others with 4x4s.

did not know that the snatch block would half the speed as well, still faster then the come along i bet though .

i was thinkin of mounting it to a 2" hitch mount so i could swap it between my 2 trucks . thanks for the info keep it coming if u got it . just reading the wright up thanx for the link island yota .

Well, that's way beyond silly.

Look into some of the 4x4 clubs in your area. I know that there are some.

if you insist upon wheeling by yourself, don't buy a no-name winch.

Save up and get a GOOD winch. You'll kick yourself in the ass the one time you're stuck and the no-name takes a flaming dump on you, or doesn't have the advertised umph to get you out.

jjrgr21 Oct 7, 2007 05:27 AM

X2, i got stuck bigtime just looking for new fishing spots by myself. no winch, truck was running for 4 hours in mud and water until the tow truck came. and it rained

AxleIke Oct 7, 2007 07:15 AM

WARN. You'll never give it another thought

Island_Yota Oct 7, 2007 10:30 AM

I think having a winch is better than no winch at all, Plus the Champions have proven themselves, only complains ive heard is the the line speed is slow compared to a Warn, buttons on the controllers pop out but still function 100%, and the chrome on the fairlead wears off. Carry the come-along with you just in case something does happen. If you have the money for a warn dont bother, buy the champion and use the $600 you saved to upgrade your rig!

ozziesironmanoffroad Oct 7, 2007 10:57 AM

i usually wheel by myself, but i dont go crazy and i stick to trails i know, and theyre all easy. being stuck in the middle of the desert doesnt sound like it would be fun....

scumrunner Oct 8, 2007 07:48 PM

ok so i checked the 2 costcos in the area no winch's except for a small atv winch ,i didnt ask about ordering one while i was there but i did look at the costco.ca site they had nothing on the winch or any winch .

so after i read the post on the champion from island yota i noticed that the one at canadian tire had less hp its 1.6kw/ 2.2 hp and the one in the wright up from costco was 2.7kw/3.6hp.

i think i will stay away from the canadian tire one.

thanksgiving delayed my responce mmmmmm was good .

You can get a warn winch for $600 brand new.

I did.

www.winchdepot.com

Again. No-name winches=bad idea. ESPECIALLY when they're cheap.

The old saying "you get what you pay for" is in full effect with winches.

Shipping an 80+ pound winch across the border wont save him any money. I think the Canadian tire site has a typo, maybe go into your local Canadian tire and read the specs on the box.

weren't you guys just on the positive side of the dollar recently? lol
