i had this guy tell me that if u put a 20r head on a 22r u get better/more compression which = more power...is this true?...and wat motor do u guys prefer, 22r or re???

yes will work with a little bit of work to the 22r.

rowdy235 11-13-2007 06:08 PM

On a trail rig I'll take a 22r

For a DD i'll take a 22re

kauaiboy89 11-13-2007 06:15 PM

so does this head swap give me more hp and torque? and does it create any bad after effects to other parts in the motor?
and y is the 22r better for offfroading?
does that mean i shouldnt offroad with a 22re?

"and y is the 22r better for offfroading?

NO, WRONG! thats not at all what I wanted you to think. The 22re is actually better than the 22r in some situations when you are on steep inclines. I would just prefer a 22r because I think they are more resilient, as well as pure personal preference. But you can absolutely take a 22re offroading.

As for performance increase, the 20r head has much better flow. giving you more power. The ideal setup is 20r head and 22r early (<1984) block.

kauaiboy89 11-13-2007 06:33 PM

is it kuz the 22r is carbed and it will bog out on steep inclines and since the 22re is injected u dont need to worry about it? and will it take sum fab work or machining to throw the 20r head on the 1984 22r block?

stormin94 11-15-2007 10:47 PM

it should bolt right up. I dunno about the gaskets, though.

personally i think the 22re is better off road than the 22r and you dont have to worry about stalling on odd angles and such. but either way both are great motors.

How much difference is there really, between the older 22R's and newer 22RE's like in my 89 Runner?
