Transfer case repair/replacement help

help.

I think the transfer case in my 91' has died. It has been clunking very hard when I accelerate. And when I put it into park, it rolls at least a foot or more before it stops. A mechanic told me he thought there was excessive play in the transfer case.
Yesterday, my wife said while accelerating, the tranny sounded like it was grinding gears before it finally seemed to catch and drive away.
Today, while accelerating, it stopped working, when she hit the gas, it didn't go anywhere, and it still rolls in park.
So, is there a way to repair these things? do I need to swap the whole tranny, or can I just swap the transfer case? Where can I get a transfer case?
Please help, the truck was for sale until this happened (didn't want to sell it anyway).

Thanks!
Kent

Your transfer case shouldn't be doing anything unless you are driving around in 4wd. Sounds like more of a problem with you tranny although I couldn't tell you what.

Or clutch? Is it a 5sp or auto. I'm assuming auto since you said "put it in Park".

I don't really get how autos work but I doubt this has anything to do with your transfer case. Unless maybe the input shaft is sheared?

My truck is an auto. I may be mistaken, but the tranny attaches to the transfer caase, and the yokes for the drive shafts come out of the transfer case. All of the power from the engine goes through the tranny, to the transfer case, to the axles..

Actually, I think the problem may only be a a badly adjusted shifter arm for the transfer case, anyone know how to adjust it?
Thanks

Nevermind. I suggest you take it to another mechanic. Thanks for the powertrain lesson though. I'm still pretty sure it isn't anything to do with your transfer case. Unless of course it's the input shaft.

On second thought your tcase might be slipping into neutral somehow? Neverheard of it and I can't get my head around how it would happen. There's nothing to adjust on the tcase shifter arm.

I suggest you pay the $40 or so to have a transmission shop give you a diagnosis. If you shop around, you might be able to find one to give it a look for free.

Can you shift it into 4wd LO? Does it work fine then?

You need to either get under there and start pulling drive shafts and checking things yourself, or take it to a mechanic. No way to do an e-diagnosis on this one.

The truck does shift into LO, and it drives that way. I drove it home that way (slowly). When I was down the street from My house, I tries HI again, and it drove fine for about a block, then it seemed to slip out of Hi gear.
So I was wondering if it could be the shift lever for the transfer case. Is there a way to adjust it? Could it be something else?

Thanks

P.S.
NEOWORMO- I hope I didn't come off as a smart-ass in my response. I was really trying to explain my understanding of my all-wheel drive system. IT was that understanding that explained my limited self diagnosis.

So this is the t-case in your Landcruiser that you are talking about. Is it indeed full time 4WD? You might have a look at the t-case shifter base to make sure it is not binding up with the shifter boot, especially with the body lift. If the boot is being compressed by the shifter, it can be popped out of gear when the body flexes on the frame or when the drivetrain flexes on the motor/tranny mounts.

My suggestion is still whats going to have to be done. Get under there and get dirty. Take a look at the shifter and see if theres slop. Have someone in the truck and shift it manually while you look and see whats going on. Push it by hand to see if it moves further. Disconnect it and shift it manually. Make sure its moving far enough.

LiveLarg-
Have you fixed the problem?

I just had exactly the same thing happne with my 81-man-TD cruiser(25 minutes ago)

grinding (jangling noises) in High Range

smooth prefect performance in Low range

I have already located a replacement transfer case for under $500, but how did you go about fixing your issue??

Stay well

YOTA_FORCE 04-24-2009 03:41 AM

I know when I put a body lift on my Yota I had a problem with it kicking out of four high. I had to wrench on my shifter to bend it so it would stay in gear. Also I took my boot of and pulled one of the boot layers out. Your sup. to modify your shifter after you put a body lift on....or you can do what i did.
