Speedo Stoped working?!?!
I'm just driving around and it was working fine then i look at it again and it just quit working.
Its almost new 92 yota pickup with only 5500 miles on it and never taken off road. What happened? From what ive read on the forum i need a speed sensor i think where is this located on the truck..... HELP?? Thanks-Blake |
the speedo cable runs from the right side of your tranny to your dash first make sure its still connected but thats where it is hope that helps

i dunno some are electronic and some are mechanical my 90 4-runner is mechanical but my now sold 93 extracab was electronic let me know if you find out.... when its cold outside my speedometer shakes from like 15 to 70 mph pretty violently but i have been too lazy to try and replace anything being that it works fine after 5 or 10 minuts and has no problems when its above freezing outside

(Assuming we're talking about a mechanical setup here)
If the speedo is jumping around, chances are the cable is binding (bent around something) or sticky. First follow the cable and make sure there are no sharp bends or anything like that in it. Then try lubing the cable, if none of that works I think the only option is to replace the cable |
sweet thanks dude anyway i have kinda fallen in love with this small quirk in my truck so if thats all it is i wont worry about it unless it totally breaks :)
well blake i hope rowdy was able to help you his diagnosis sounds good :)let us know how it goes

The 89-95 Pickup Speedo cables are notorious for malfunctioning. The best thing to do if it doesn't stop jumping around (it usually squeaks too!) is to replace it. I usually only goes out every 100k or so. It takes about an hour at most to replace. Unfortunately you have to take the instrument cluster out, which means the lower part of the dash, not too bad. Other than that, you just find the cable, which screws in on the passenger side of the transfer case, and re run the cable in the same route. All in all pretty simple and much less annoying than the squeek.

Mine just randomly started working again and is fine. Only thing i notice is that every time i put the turn signal on it goes to 0 and then back to the speed quickly.... hmmmm
|
sounds like you got a bad speed sensor. On 4runners... IIRC... 91 and earlier, came with speedo cable, 92-94 had the electronic speed sensors, and then they switched back to mechanical cable for 95. IDK if that holds true for p/u's, but I'm fairly certain that is the case for the runners.
Mine used to do the same thing if the tranny fluid was low....might wanna check that out. |
