Shipping Tires

I am trying to sell my wheels and tires, but don't really know the best way to go about shipping them. I know people on here ship tires and wheels all the time, so if anyone has any advice, experience, etc. please let me know. I am planning to ship the tires mounted on the wheels if that makes any difference.

I shipped a set of 4 33x15.50 Swampers on 10" steel wheels via Forward Air a few years ago. Take them in to their depot and put them on a palette and they plastic wrapped them and all:

Are you selling your MTR's mounted on the limited wheels? How much tread is left on then and how much $$$ are you asking?

try fedex and dhl. Ship them separately, i've had good results with both and have received set the same way.

I called forward air today and got a fairly reasonable quote from them. I had checked with DHL but they said they didn't do residential shipping??? Am I missing something there?

$650 for the rims and tires together, about 35% tread remaining with even wear and they are not chewed up at all from wheeling. Don't you have limited rims already though?

Ya I do already have limited wheels. Will you sell the tires seperately?

tarheelrunner 10-27-2007 07:05 PM

Yeah I will as soon as I find someone to buy the wheels. I think I'm going to upgrade to some 305 baja MTZs, so I want to get rid of the MT/Rs too. We could probably meet somewhere too so we wouldn't have to worry about shipping, about 200 miles between us (I'm in Chapel Hill, NC).

What are you looking to get for the tires?

Looks like I might be shipping the tires WITHOUT the rims-anybody have any idea what an uninflated 285 MT/R weighs (just the tire, no wheel)?

Djlarroc 10-29-2007 05:24 PM

I'm thinking about 54-58lbs. I was researching tire weights for that size and most fell in that range.

tarheelrunner 10-29-2007 06:28 PM

I found the same thing when searching the specs on tirerack. That just doesn't seem right though, 50+ pounds for just the rubber? I've taken the wheels off before with the tires on and full of air and they didn't seem that heavy (with the wheels weighing ~40 pounds then that would mean the wheel and tire would weigh ~100)-it couldn't have been that heavy.

Djlarroc 10-29-2007 06:53 PM

Well no, because your stockers only weigh about 20 lbs or so. I mounted a 15" steelie on the super swampers I bought/sold. THOSE THINGS WERE HEAVY! I think the wheel is about 28lbs and the tire was like 65-69lbs or so.

tarheelrunner 10-29-2007 07:43 PM

Oh nevermind, didn't realize the stock alloys were that light.

tarheelrunner 11-25-2007 04:21 PM

Looks like I will be shipping the stock wheels as well. I'm planning to just put them in the box that the new ones come in. What company have you guys found the cheapest for shipping items this size- UPS, Fed-Ex, etc.? Thanks

4Crawler 11-25-2007 04:24 PM

Usually FedEx Ground or HomeDelivery is lowest, but they have weight limits on Home Delivery, so check that out first. Easiest thing to do is get the shipment weight/size and go onto the various sites and get shipping estimates.
