SAE 30 motor oil instead of manual tranny grease
My uncle and I were talking today about our Toyotas and be told me something very interesting. He told me after he got his tranny rebuilt the mechanic told him to put SAE 30 motor oil in it instead of regular manual tranny grease. I looked at him kind of weird and he said "no kidding''. He said it's really good in very cold temps and very hot temps and you would never have to change it again. I dont know if I trust this. What do you guys think?

Lets see, Toyota engineers spec's 90wt gear oil (IIRC), and some backyard mech tells you to run 30wt. Sure it shift great when its cold, but it wouldn't off the protection of heavier oil that your tranny needs. Buy Redline MT-90 if you're never going to change your gear oil again as at least it will last a long time and shift great during the meantime.

I've heard of people using 30 weight motor oil in the trans numerous times with good results, but personally, I'd stick with what Toyota recommends. Some of the newer Fords even run ATF in the manual transmissions, which is paradoxical, true.
