Poor Rock Oil Pump Casting
 

Take a look at this Rock oil pump I got in my master rebuild kit:

Now how am I supposed to set timing without proper timing marks? As I see it, I could complain to Rock, measure the marks on my old OEM pump and put my own marks on this one, reuse my old OEM pump, or get a new OEM pump.

Recommendations?

I had the same bull with mine. I reused my stock timing sprocket on the crank. Rock one is crap. I also noticed as soon as I saw the oil pump housing... So I took all the guts and switched them. The rock casting is crap. I forgot to let Engnbldr know cuz have been to busy to call n complain. Everythingelse seemed okay. Guess we will see when I fire up my completley rebuilt motor for the first time tomorrow.

my recc. Switch to yer stock casting. Use the other new parts.. And I would not use that crank sprocket. And weird.. But did you notice with the master rebuild kit you get 3 DIFFERENT front oil seals... I tried to pick the one that lookd most like oem... I think it was the one that actually came with them pump that I used.

interesting. See you got the timing cover too... What for? Did you get it shaved down with the block? I believe their timing covers are crap from what I hear...

I just priced out a new OEM oil pump at $200, so that's probably not an option. I'm really tempted to reuse my old OEM oil pump. At this point I think I have more faith in a 210,000 mile AISIN pump than the Rock one.

I've noticed two different front oil seals and I thought that was kind of weird, but I haven't really dug into the whole package yet so there might still be a third. I wonder if maybe the sealing lips are in different locations for people who have grooved harmonic balancers. That would be a nice little extra.

Thanks for the tip on the timing sprocket, by the way. I'll swap my old OEM sprocket back on.

Edit: I got the full master rebuild kit which came with the timing cover. There was nothing wrong with my old one (no grooves, etc) so maybe I'll just clean it up and reuse it. At this point I'm really starting to wonder how good of a value the Rock kit really is. I've already decided to go with different rings and an OEM head gasket, and now the timing sprocket, oil pump and maybe the timing cover too. You truly do get what you pay for.

I don't have a doubt that many of the parts will work great... Yet some things are unacceptable. Look at that sprocket I am talking about and see the difference in them. The oem also weighs 2x more... And has thicker material in critical areas... Especially the surface that is butted against the crank... For 200 bucks... You can't complain... Just the pistons alon from the toyta dealer cost that.. The kit is worth every penny... You just need to know what parts you don't NEED or want from the kit.. Most of their gaskets and al that are good stuff. And it is VERY complete. All the little gaskets n stuff here n there that don't NEED to be oem. The kit saves tons of money. At least 200 for me shipped saved me tons of money...Where did you get your kit from?

I sympathize with you.
I had two Rock oil pumps leak. I took both off 3 times, rechecked, changed the rubber seal and put them back on and they leaked.
I now see a little weep on my new motor in my 82 around the top of the Rock oil pump.

I didnt buy the master kit for the same reasns that you guys are facing.I did the pick and choose.Cost me more but I did get the stuff I wanted.Enginequest makes a top notch cover.Melling oil pump had a casting flaw that caused oil leak,but they did warranty it.I did use the rock style head gasket,but I would use victor MLS if I was doing it again.You can get osk timing chain and gears on ebay for less than $50,and aisin oil pumps are also respectively priced.Dont waste money on doa guides,they are just reformed 20r guides.I used npr pistons and rings.EB says rock is reboxed NPR,but I cant vouch for that.

Even go as far as to compare the oil compressing grooves and oiling grooves inside the pump where the gear ride. You will notice the Aisin will allow for more oil to flow thru smoothly and properly. I still find nothing wrong with swapping the internals into your stock Aisin pump housing... as long as it is in good shape.

Rock is not repackaged NPR... it is all Rock products. It is stamped into EVERYTHING in the Engnbldr package I got.(not that i am complaining) aside from the few parts i refused to use. Its Rock except of course the nice OSK tensioner and chain kit that Engnbldr throws in. I don't see anything wrong with using MOST of the Rock stuff in the kit. I have no doubt that my motor will run perfect for a long time to come. I may regret using the Rock Rings.. but we will see. I still have faith in my machinist and my engine setup and the break in i will do. I think I will be fine with the chrome rings. And I see nothing wrong with the Rock pistons. ONLY thing I debated was the rings.

I did Nippon rings as well due to doubting Rock's rings. Some people have had good luck with them, but I found too many stories where people had to redo them after only 20-30k miles.

I've heard good things about Melling pumps. I'll probably get one of those and call it good.

just hop on ebay and buy an aisin pump. They are like 60 bucks.. Why the heck would you buy a melling pump instead of aisin?

if your gonna buy the good stuff you might as well go OEM.

They're actually a little over $80 now, but still worth it. You're right. If it's only a few bucks more for OEM it's definitely worth it. Thanks for the tip on eBay!
