Lower mileage 3rd Gen vs higher mileage 4th Gen 4runner

Ok, I'm not going to start another "I'm backkkk" thread (those of you that have been around here a while will know what I'm talking about)...yet :D However, the time has come to move the Silverado on to another life. At 230k miles, it's been a decent truck and put up with its share of abuse. With a trans rebuild on the horizon along with some additional upcoming repairs/maintenance items, there isn't any point in dumping that kind of money into a truck that's worth 4k right now (2wd :( ).

That being said, I'm back in the market for a Toyota! :bigok: I'm pretty sure I want to go back to a 4runner. The 4th gens are nice and the prices have really come down. They only really appeal to me in the sport package though. I'm not going to lie, the v8 is enticing as well. The only downfall are those exhaust manifolds.

I have to say, there's still a part of me that wants a 3rd gen. I had a 2nd gen in college and was always envious of the 3rds. Now may be my chance :). I've recently seen a couple low mileage 3rd gens (100-125k) pop up for about $7k. The 4th gens that are in my price range (8-10k) typically are higher mileage (150-200k). 4wd is a requirement as I plan on making some ski trips in it.

I realize I may get a slightly biased opinion here. What do you guys think? Lower mileage 3rd gen or a higher mileage 4th? I'd love to hear from the owners that have had both.

I have one other quick question while you're writing your comments. Is the ATRAC in the '01 & '02 really bad enough that I should avoid those models? I've read the horror stories but know it can be disabled. So far it looks like 99-00 will be the preference. I do want to have the multi-mode transfercase.

THANK YOU YOTATECH!!!

:bigok:
