Looking for a 2wd mileage post.
 

I can't seem to find the post in one of the mileage treads.
Someone posted up a pic for there 2wd toyota p/u that had an extra lower fairing they built to help with mileage.

My problem is that my 87 4Runner w/ 22re, 35's, 4.88's, armor, lockers, etc. is getting the same mileage as my 84 2wd p/u w/ a 22r and a Weber carb.

I have done all the normal stuff, tune up, filters, fluids, drive like a grandma.

Both rigs are getting 20-21 mpg.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

20-21 mpg is average for the 22RE :/

For my 4Runner I think 20-21mpg is great considering all the mod and extra weight. I think that sucks for a lighter 2wd truck w/ almost NO mods.

My 88 22r 4 speed 2wd pickup got 30mpg's from tacoma to bellingham and back when I picked my 4.56's for my 4Runner. Mind you I was doing 70 plus most of the way. Kept it in the powerband 2800 to 3000 rpms. Thought my math was wrong, I was so shocked to see 30!!! I tried to keep it around 60 before, best I got then was 26-27 freeway.

That's the kind of mileage I was expecting when I bought it for a commuter truck. That's why I think there is something wrong with my 2wd truck. I also forgot to mention both rigs are 5 speeds.

Funny, I was looking to swap to a 5 speed for a while, I think I'll hold off. I think normally those little pick ups are getting in the 25-26 mpg range.

Stock tire size? drivetrain not regeared? Can't think of what would cause you to get 21 if you drive like a grandma with it. Well, I guess besides tuning everything.

Stock size tires and drivetrain. The only mod i can find the PO did on the rig is add a weber carb.

The interesting thing about this truck is that it was put together from a few trucks:
Part SR5 part DLX package, it was and EFI truck now it's Carb, and seats are from a Turbo.

Maybe the carb needs to be dialed in a little? I still don't see it making a 5 mpg difference, but who knows.....

Still haven't found the post.
But, I had a bad u-joint and support bearing so i replaced the three u-joints and the support bearing. There was a noticeable vibration before the swap. Now no more vibrations and at the next fill up I got 24 mpg.

I didn't think the bad joints on the driveline would cause mpg lost, but that is the only change.

Now if I can only figure out how to get a few more mpg I will be stoked.

I also forgot to say the previous owner took off all the emission stuff. I don't know how that is affecting the MPG.

Man I wish I was getting in the 20's with my 35's...:(
