A little Oil Filter Tech!

I just figured I'd post some comparison pictures of 2 Toyota oil filters.

The filter on the left is for a 3.0 and a 3.4. The one on the right is for the 4.7 V8.

The larger one will easily fit on the 3.0 and 3.4 and it doesn't cost anymore than the smaller one.

Here's a picture of the larger one on my 3.4 swapped daily driver.

I keep 10+ of these filters around if anyone local needs one. $6.00.

yeah, toyota has 3 sizes they use for MOST of their motors. the 4cyl size, the 6cyl size, and 8cyl size.

I've been using those V8 filters on my Supra for a while now. They also fit on 22R motors if you feel like it.

Good info but probably posted in the wrong section.

You are probably correct.

the 4.7 V8 filter fits on the 22re? if thats the case i may start using that filter... hell a genuine toyota filter (instead of a SHELL filter.. SH29) and mobil 1 or royal purple in a 22re? will prob go another 20+ years before dying.

Haha, Denso filters made in the USA and Thailand....

So the 4.7L filter will fit in place of a 3vze stock filter??

The real deal Japan filters are like $12-$20+. They sell them as TRD filters. But even then you have to know what part numbers to ask for to get the Japan made filters. Most of the high dollar TRD filters are made in the USA. Probably by FRAM and the other filter company's.

Here's an article with cut up Toyota filters.

3vze and 22re engines use the SAME filter if anyone is curious. Same part number.

I've always used the 90915-YZZD1 filter for my 2002 4Runner (and my 2004 Camry, and my 1993 4Runner).

The really tall one is probably a VW filter, which also fits. When I had vw's I'd run toyota v8 filters on them, because my source for genuine filters was cheaper from Toyota than from VW, which wanted 2x more.

Any benefit of running a bigger filter than stock?

You can usually find them for $40.00 a case (10) with shipping included from several sources on ebay. I just got a case two weeks ago.

Jay351 05-12-2009 03:24 PM

So I went and picked up a few parts at the stealer.

Including one of those v8 filters. Cost me Just over $7. Guy said he would knock off %15 if I bought a case. Worked out to $64.50+ tax. ouch!!!

At least I only have to change my oil 2-3 times a year.

Jay351 05-12-2009 08:57 PM

She fits, pretty tight!! :D
