Interior Paint
 

I am going to repaint all of my plastic and vinyl interior items(ripped all out today) and was curious what type paint and process you guys could recommend. The interior is grey, so how can i get it close to factory as possible. Thanks for any info!!!!!!!

Vato Zone and the like have paint for plastics. Take a small trim panel and try to match it.
Degrease the parts GOOD!!!

SEM. go to a auto paint supply place and they should have it. its more expansive but it will last a while and is what most interior shops use. the krylon plastic stuff will chip off in most cases in like 1-2 years.

Anyone ever tried to paint vinyl and does it require different prep?

Although I don't have a lot of posts on this site, I do elsewhere, and have built several project cars. Most of the time I learned what I know the hard way.
SEM is the stuff to use. I did the entire interior of my RX-7 from black to light tan and it worked like a champ. I will be using this stuff to convert the interior of my 4runner from gray to black this fall.

Here's my advice:

First, take everything apart as much as you can. The more you leave together, the more areas there are that can show up unpainted later due to vehicle flex, sagging, etc.

Second, prep every piece by washing with dawn and warm water. Then, after it is fully dry, wipe down with isopropyl alchohol. Any grease or oil, even from your fingers, can affect the paint job.

Third, go slow. Many light coats will always look better than one heavy coat. Trust me on this, the first time you see that run appear on your work, you will be cursing yourself for going too fast when you knew slow was the way to go!

As far as getting SEM, it is available in larger quantities, but the rattle can variety is what I normally use, mostly because I'm low tech and not a good planner. If you do rattle can it, get one of those wal-mart handles that makes it easy on your finger after a while.

Thanks for the info!! I just started Sat. and will be working when time is avail. so it will take a while. I did buy SEM paint and its very expensive but i guess you get what you pay for.:guitar:
