Just read up on this. never thought about this. My throttle body was about that dirty when I rebuild my motor.

I'm calling shinanigans. it makes sense in theory though

I did mine with a K&N I just don't use the oil , same way on both of my Harley's , clean them with soap and water every oil change and never have a problem

Well, I've only used the regular paper filters and my never-been-cleaned-in-150k-miles throttle body looks only somewhat dirtier than their "should look like this" pics.

the black buildup has nothing to do with aftermarket filters...

search the forums for "black goo"

it's caused by the way the EGR system dumps out by the throttle body inside the 22re's upper plentum. it get's really bad like that if say an O2 sensor goes out and the engine runs really rich. a bunch of miles and blow-by can cause it to build up like that too


been there, done that, with a motor that had 260k miles on it and had been running an OEM paper filter for all those miles :great:

K&N Filters are perfectly fine, but when you apply the filter oil, wipe it off with a shop rag so that is not dripping with oil. In OBDII cars, excess filter oil will cover the MAF sensor and cause a CEL code, system lean PO171 or the sort.

You're throttle body was that dirty because it most likely never saw a good day in its life.

Yeah guys, you don't saturate the foam filter in oil.
Lightly spray it on the outside, like a light dusting, then wrap it in paper towels to absorb some of the oil..
If this was the reason your TB was filthy, then all dirtbikes and fourwheelers in america would be this bad.. And they arent.

Been running a K&N on mine all its life ... 350k miles, still runs like a top and no issues at all with oiled up AFM's or the like . :great:

^^ exactly right, the K&N air filter has nothing to do with causing that problem ^^.
