First Gen Vs. Second Gen

Are First gen Single cabs about the same size as second gen single cabs as far as room goes inside? Ive owned a 86 single cab wich was small but Ive never been in a first gen, atleast sober enough to remember what the room was like. Any input would be great since im 6'7 and would need a really big shoe horn to get myself in if it was any smaller than my 86 was.

Thanks Justin

good question. I know 3rd gens have a little more, but not much. Maybe we can get some 1st and 2nd gen owners to give some measurements. Window to window, floor to roof. That sort of thing?

Not sure on the first and second gen trucks. But like you, I am also 6'7" and owned a 3rd gen single cab, that was cramped...

Yeah I dont really need exact measurements I just want a rough estimate if the leg room and head room is the same, the cabs look similar size. Heres my 86. I just want an idea since I might be buying an 81 but its a ways away and I wanna know if im gona fit before I drive all that way, I dont know anyone with a first gen I can test fit.

2nd Gen cabs are 4" longer than a 1st Gen.

Gotcha. I personally think you can make all the difference with seat swaps. But I'm not the guy to talk to, I'm only 5,10, Im comfortable in the glove box.

Thanks Dropzone thats exactly what I need to know. My 86 had integra seats and It provided a little more room, maybe if I went to a thin racing seat I could stuff myself in a first gen.

I am 5'9" I am glad my Trekker is open in the back.. Was able to put the seat back a hair and can recline too

Edit-might be hard to find but Fiero or 914 seats are comfortable with a thin back. I had sets of both in cars from my Volkswagen days..

My knee would rest out the window on the window sill in my 86. There is plenty of room in my 88 runner though. Guess I like toyota's too much to care about comfort.

Ya the runners for sure. You could put the seat back more.

Datsun Z-car (240-280) seats are also very thin. They might be harder to find, but it's a thought

if looking for thin seats to install in a single cab, I found some of the thinnest bucket seats i've ever seen in cars like Rav4 and CRV when scouting the junk yards. They are much thinner than the seats in little cars like corollas and civics for whatever reason, and are probably going to be the closest thickness to your backless stock bench seat if you're looking to keep some leg room. Even sportier cars seem to have thick seats. I think Scions have pretty thin seats these days as well.

I had an 83 Datsun single cab and I'm only 5'10" and the cab is just about the same size of a 1st gen toyota. With the stock backless bench seat it was comfortable. I ended up sticking some bucket seats from an Eclipse in there that were "average" thickness and although it only reduced about 1, maybe 2" leg room it was enough to make me vow to never own a single cab truck again. I can't imagine being over 6' and having to deal with a single cab. My mother in-law is gonna hand me down her single cab tacoma in a few years and i'm already planning to swap an extra cab on that frame, lol.

Fast forward to modern trucks - i sat in a single cab Tundra and that thing has more room behind the seat than my xcab does! that thing is made for giants!
