Dimedout's Center Console Build

4 Attachment(s)
So, I bought a console from fellow YT member Dakotawho for my 88 Xtra cab to replace the horrible autozone junk that came when I bought it. Here is what I started with.
Attachment 163962

I decided I wanted to something more than just install it so, I figured first I would remove the ashtray and heat switch I wouldn't need in the Xtra cab. Then I found some 6.5 Kenwoods a buddy had and started cutting.
Attachment 163963
I had to cut out what seemed to be plastic rivets holding the heat control...pretty simple. The ashtray pulled right out.
Next, I cut some sheet metal and used 2 part epoxy to attach it from the backside. This will be covered with fiber glassed and bondo.

I started the fiber glass last night and will post more pics as I get this project finished up if there is any interest. This is just a simple thing I figured I would share with you guys. Thanks.

putting speakers there are going to be pressed right against the driver and passenger seat. the center consoles on these rigs barely fit as it is. I'd be worried about not letting the speaker be able to flex and blowing the voice coils. but its up to you!

The speakers have grills. It's pretty tight in a 4-runner but there is much more room between the seats in the truck. I should have install done by the end of the weekend. I'll find out then I guess.

Looks pretty cool to me. I would be curious to see how it sounds afterwards.

I need to get more speakers in mine. Currently only have some crappy ones in the stock dash locations.

So I wanted to finish up this thread. I installed the console and a new radio over the weekend. Still gotta anchor in the back but, I gotta take it back out to put in the new shifter bushings in.
This is the back after fiberglass and bondo. And paint.

This is the install
Attachment 162445
I still gotta find some of the change holders.

what's that you have your glock in? And does it stay put when you draw?

Dimedout May 1, 2013 02:30 PM

It's a hunting glove. Lol. And if you mean drive yes, it stays there well.

Draw means pull pistol from glove.... Lol I think that's what he was meaning.

Dimedout May 1, 2013 03:12 PM

Yea, I understand but wasn't sure. I don't "draw" it often. It's just a spot that it won't get scratched up.

a51young May 1, 2013 03:21 PM

Originally meant draw, although the response to drive is good as well. It's always a good idea to test that kind of stuff out a few times just in case.

anyway, sorry about the thread hijack. center console looks nice! Hows the sound?

Dimedout May 1, 2013 03:35 PM

It sounds decent. I need a couple 10's I believe. Has a bunch of treble. I don't worry about the draw much due to a .40 being able to rip right through the glove. Lol.

Lcp is sweet!

I see you only have DLX buckets if you had the SR5 seats there would be no room for those speakers at all... and the Glock would be a squeeze too for that matter...

Yea, I have no idea about the history of this truck. As you can see the covers are different also. Would those seats be standard on the truck? Or they have been installed by someone? The slider doesn't work on the drivers side.

No those are the stock buckets for a DLX model.
As for the slider not working the cross connect wire is probably broken... if you remove the seat and flip her over you'll see that the handle is attached to a cam that slips over the teeth in the slider track and there should be a stiff wire crossing over to an identical cam/tooth set on the other side... this sometimes breaks or gets disconnected if this happens the the cam won't release and no slide action results. It's fairly easy to fix...

Thanks. I'll look into that. I know one of the wires is just laying under the seat.
