cup holders in first gen 4runner and second gen trucks

So awhile back I read on one of the forums about someone putting a vw passat or jetta cupholder into our trucks. So after looking for awhile I finally found one out of a passat and installed it into my 4runner and it works great. So i thought id share with you my solution to the cupholder problem everybody seems to have with our trucks. This set up cost me under 20 bucks.
So here is what you need.
First you need to find a cupholder at a junkyard or online. I would recommend a junkyard way cheaper then online

Next you will need to buy some 3m double sided tape
Then you will need to make some type of support or find something that will work. I used a plastic piece of a 4runners roll bar and that works perfect. I had an extra one in my garage.

Then you will need to attach the double sided tape to the top of the cupholder, to the inside part of the plastic piece so it stays in place and to the top of the support as well

Then you carefully slide the cup holder in place so its flush on both sides of the radio bezel thing. And then you have cupholders that almost look like factory and work great

Crapple21 10-16-2012 02:00 PM

sweet thanks. got to see if this will work for my automatic. only problem i see is.. for the driver its a reach for the drink tho

Crapple21 10-16-2012 09:30 PM

It's actually not bad at all to reach your drink

wyoming9 10-16-2012 11:26 PM

Just curious where you live??

Around here the first good pothole i think it would just break right off.If it didn`t break have enough spring action to bounce the cup out.:camp:

Then with my short arms It would be quite a stretch to reach the cup.

That's what the support thing is for so it doesn't come off and the cup holder has like rubber things to hold the cup trust me it work great and isn't that far of a reach

A quick update On this it's still working great haven't spilled a drink yet. I changed how I mounted it I used a metal strap and ran it underneath and used the pre existing screw holes on the side of the radio area and it's holding up great.

Damn, that's sweet! Too bad that will cover up my cb speaker :/

Crapple21 02-14-2015 02:25 PM

Ya I had that problem too but I ended up moving my cb under my passenger seat. I figured i use my cup holders almost everyday and I only use my cb every once and awhile

Magic.

With the help of some aluminum stock :D I'm not completely done yet though. Still have to clean up the metal.
