My manual talks about NGLI #1, #2, and I think somebody mentioned sodium based #0 for the knuckles?

All I can find at the auto parts store is #2. All sorts of different kinds of #2, but just #2. What's the deal? Does everybody just use #2 for the U-joints, steering components, and knuckles?

Every vehicle I've owned, I've always used the cheapest black grease I could find, and never had a problem. I've had the same grease in the knuckles on my 88 since '03, and every time I inspect the wheel bearings, its still nice and clean. Just keep up with maintenence and everything will be fine.

Ok, thanks. There have been a couple posts lately about how incorrect grease in the knuckles contributes to the axle seals wearing out a lot faster, and that #1 & #2 isn't the right stuff for them. But it's got to be better than letting them go dry..

Get the marlin HD seals and forget about it.

Yeah...next time. I had a shop do the inner axle seals just a year ago, since even though I could have done it...the job intimidated me a bit. Now they're already leaking. I'm torn between just having the shop redo it, since I paid them good money, or getting the Marlin HD seals and learning how to do it myself. If I can convince the shop to install non-Toyota parts, and they'll fix it for free...hard to turn that down. I do want to know how to do it myself, though. Marlin is always backordered, too...like months.

Hi I just tried to pack grease into my toyota p/u by attaching the gun to the zerk fitting, but grease wouldn't go into the fitting, but came out the sides. This happened on every fitting I tried. What am I doing wrong?!? Using the wrong grease type? I'm really stumped, but it's probably something very simple. Help! My truck is the loudest, squeakiest vehicle I've ever heard!!!

Your grease gun is not on the fitting correct.

Or else all your fittings are clogged .

You do wipe the fittings off before trying to grease them??

I find most times I need to hold the grease nipple on the fitting and pump with the other hand. If you don`t get on the fitting correct it will push out the sides.

Every once in a while you will get a fitting that is clogged at that time I just put a new one in

Thanks, Wyoming. I found out that it was the flow ball that was stuck. I just pushed it in with a screw and it worked fine. The only problem after that was that the boots are completely shot. I have to replace the upper ball joints!
