Is this a 22R

Local guy has offered this to me....but he doesn't know anything about it...and frankly, I don't know quite enough to tell for sure. but it certainly looks alot like my 22RTE except with different intake and exhaust manifolds....

If you're looking for the shortblock, there are two different block heights. There's the "tall block" 84 and earlier and "short block" 85 and later. ~11" from bottom of block to top of block for the later ones, ~11.25" for the earlier ones.

The shorter (and newer) of the two is also called a "laser" block. It can also be identified by looking on the exhaust side of the block, just above the oil pan for a "bossed" shape that sort of looks like a circle with two smaller circles attached to either side of the large one. Kind of like an oval.

If you want to put it into a pre-85, then you want the non-laser block, if you are putting it in an 85-up, then you want the laser block.

interesting...

didn't they switch to fuel-injection in '85? so, because this is carbed, it would have to be the 'non-laser' block? right?

what's the difference? I was going to use the shortblock to replace mine. drop my 22RTE head, intake, exhaust etc. on it. maybe swap pistons to lower my CR...maybe not. Would this not be possible?

Cargun 02-14-2007 12:47 PM

Nope, has nothing to do with carbed or fuel injected. A 87 carbed engine has the same block as a 87 FI engine. A 84 fuel injected Celica has the same block as a 84 carbed.

You'll have to look into the swap... but without new pistons and possibly rods, I don't think it's possible.

yea, I just didn't realize that here were post-'85 carbed motors, and pre-'84 FI ones....

I should mention, this did come out of a truck. not from a celica. wouldn't that make it a pretty safe bet that it's pre-'84?

I'll look into it...thanks for all the info!

i looks to have a "square" valve cover so its '85 or newer

If it came out of a 4Runner, it's a 84. If it came out of a pickup.... it could be up to a 87. By my unofficial estimation about 50% of the 85-87 pickups were carbed. At least the ones people are selling.

hmmm....I was under the impression they switched completely to FI in '85....well, now I know.

and yes, if I do get it (which I probably will, even if I can't use it, cause I don't think he wants anything for it), parts will be available....for pretty cheap.

2wds were available with a carb until '90 or '91...
