YotaTech is finally going to be getting a dedicated Glossary!
This section/thread will contain everything from "SAS" to "IFS" to the various Toyota engines. In order for this to work we need your help. I am going to leave this Sticky open for you all to post in. Only rule for this thread, no BS. Post up a glossary term, the definition and that is it - no smilies, no banter back and forth, etc... I will go through and edit it grammatically and for formatting. If you have an image that is associated with your definition feel free to post it - if you do this, please make the image small, I would say 640x480 at most. Keep in mind when posting that it is your responsibility to ensure the definition/image you are posting is not Copyright'd or Trademark'd. Please look and make sure somebody hasn't already posted it. If you have any questions or you believe that a definition that has already been posted is incorrect, please PM me or another Mod and we will see that it gets corrected. TECH TERMS
2H - 2-wheel drive / high range 4H - 4-wheel drive / high range 4L - 4-wheel drive / low range A/T - All-Terrain; often used when referring to tires, a tire that is more apt to off-road conditions however less aggressive than a mud-terrain tire AAL - Add-a-Leaf ABS - Anti-lock brake system ADD - Automatic Disconnecting Differential System; disconnects the front axles and hub assemblies from the drive shaft at the differential when the vehicle is in 2-wheel drive mode, eliminating the need to disconnect them manually. It also engages the front axles to the differential when 4-wheel drive is selected Air Down - Partially deflating tires to improve traction Air Locker - Pneumatically-activated differential locker ARB - Manufacturer of high-quality aftermarket 4x4 accessories, including their patented air locking differential as well as armor for all areas of your 4x4 AT-PZEV - Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle; vehicles that produce extremely low levels of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen A-TRAC - Active Traction Control; incorporates sensors at all four wheels to monitor a loss of traction, Active TRAC employs brake and throttle control to reduce wheel spin and transfer torque to the wheel with the most traction. Auto LSD - Automatic Limited-Slip Differential; differential that automatically distributes power to the wheel that has traction, this type of differential is preferred in slippery conditions (snow, ice, gravel, etc...) BFG - B.F. Goodrich Tires CAI - Cold Air Intake CARB - California Air Resources Board Cat - Catalytic converter; exhaust device installed before the muffler to reduce emissions (Cali-spec models have dual cat's) Cat-Back - Exhaust system after the catalytic converter CEL - Check Engine Light CHMSL - Center High-Mount Stop Lamp COG - Center of Gravity CRS - Child Restraint System CV - Constant Velocity DAC - Downhill Assist Control; system that automatically applies the brakes during a downhill descent without locking the wheels DOHC - Double Overhead Cam DOT - Department of Transportation DRL - Daytime Running Lights ECM - Electronic Control Module ECT - Electronically Controlled Transmission; automatic transmissions only ECT-i - Electronically Controlled Transmission with Intelligence; automatic transmissions only ECU - Electronic Control Unit EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation E-Locker - Electronic Locking Differential FJC - FJ Cruiser (2006+) Fob - Key ring remove device; door locks, remote start, etc… FSM - Factory Service Manual; repair manuals written by Toyota and used by all Certified Toyota Technicians GAWRF - Gross axle weight rating front axle; the max weight the front axle is designed to carry GAWRR - Gross axle weight rating rear axle; the max weight the rear axle is designed to carry GPS - Global Positioning Satellite GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating; maximum combined weight rating including the vehicle and its equipment, fluids, occupants and cargo. HAC - Hill-Start Assist Control; automatically increases brake pressure to all four wheels to reduce rolling backwards while accelerating uphill. HID - High Intensity Discharge; extremely bright, often blue in color, low-wattage lights IFS - Independent Front Suspension LCA - Lower Control Arm LCD - Liquid Crystal Display LED - Light-Emitting Diode LEV - Low Emission Vehicle Live axle - Straight axle (non-IFS) Locker - Device put in differentials to lock gears together providing exceptional off-road traction. Locking Hubs - Engage-able free-spinning front hubs (i.e. Aisin manual hubs); preferred due to the ability to reduce wear on components when 4-wheel drive is not engaged. LSD - Limited Slip Differential; type of differential that improves traction by splitting torque evenly and preventing one wheel from slipping or spinning, this type of differential is preferred in slippery conditions (snow, ice, gravel, etc...) LSPBV - Load-Sensing Proportioning and Bypass Valve; mounted to the frame and the rear axle, the LSP & BV senses the weight distribution of the vehicle and automatically varies the amount of hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes based on the load in the vehicle, this helps to reduce rear-wheel lock-up with either light or heavy loads to maintain stopping control. M/T - Mud-Terrain; often used when referring to tires, a tire that is made specifically for off-road conditions MAF - Mass Air-Flow Sensor OBA - On-Board Air OBD/OBD II - On-Board Diagnostics OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer OHV - Off-Highway Vehicle OME - Old Man Emu PCM - Powertrain Control Module PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation R&P - Ring and Pinion; differential gears RR Diff Lock - Rear Differential Lock RSCA - Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbag SAC - Solid Axle Conversion SAS - Solid Axle Swap SAW - Sway A Way SFA - Solid Front Axle SOA - Spring Over Axle SOHC - Single Overhead Cam SRS - Supplemental Restraint System; airbags inflated with nitrogen gas that deploy within a fraction of a second SULEV - Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System; alerts the driver by illuminating an indicator on the dash when tire pressure reaches a critically low level TRAC - Traction control; helps to avoid slippage of the driving wheels by slightly applying the brake on a slipping drive wheel and reducing the throttle to maintain traction according to the road surface conditions. TRD - Toyota Racing Development TSB - Toyota Service Bulletin UCA - Upper Control Arm ULEV II - Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II Unibody - The floor pan of a vehicle and chassis are connected to form a single structure; there is no separate frame. By welding all body panels together to form the vehicle's frame, it is possible to build in strength and rigidity with less weight. URD - Underdog Racing Development; manufacturer/distributor for various aftermarket performance parts including the TRD Superchargers VSC - Vehicle Stability Control VVT-i – Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence; varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position. At introduction output was specified as 145hp then later bumped to 150hp at 4800rpm with 180ft•lbf of torque at 3400rpm. Despite sharing an engine family designation the 3VZ-E and 3VZ-FE have few parts in common. Applications: 1988-1995 Toyota 4Runner 1988-1995 Toyota Pickup 1993-1995 Toyota T100 3VZ-FE 3.0L (2958cc) produced from 1992 to 1997.5. Applications: 1992-1997 Toyota Camry 5VZ-FE 3.4L (3378cc) produced from 1995.5 to 2004. Cylinder bore was up to 93.5mm (3.7in) and stroke was 82.0mm (3.2in). Output is 201hp at 4800rpm with 220ft•lbf of torque at 3600rpm. Cast iron engine block, aluminum DOHC cylinder heads, uses MFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and features large cast connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold. Applications: Toyota Tacoma Toyota Tundra Toyota T-100 Toyota 4Runner Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Toyota Granvia 1GR-FE 4.0L (3955cc) produced from 2003 to present. Bore is 94mm and stroke is 95mm. Output is 236hp at 5200rpm with 266lb•ft of torque at 4000rpm on 87 octane, and 239hp at 5200rpm with 278lb•ft at 3700rpm on 91 octane. Features Toyota's VVT-i technology.
