whats gears will make me faster with 31 -10.5 -15 tires

Hey guys I'm now working on performance mods for my 89 runner, I don't know much about gears but I think they can make you accelerate faster? I want the fastest gears I can get that would be good 31 10.5 tires and I would also like to know how to install them thanks guys!

Did the truck come stock with the 31" tire option? if so you got the optimal gears already in it.

Best way to install them is to pay somebody who knows how. Sorry if that sounded prickly, but I'm guessing about 10% (may be high) of the guys here have done their own gear install. It's just one of those things better left to the highly qualified-which I certainly am not.

Love the user name by the way.

the higher top speed, the more torque and acceleration you sacrifice...keep that in mind

Idk mine a 89 v6 I don't think stock was that but Idk, there's gotta be something better than stock though what about 4.88 will they make a difference?

Good advice!! And thanks ya rock on

you cant make a 3.0 fast. putting 4.88s with 31s on will just kill your gas mileage ( its bad to begin with )

Hey I got a Toyota and I want to make it fast. I mean I bought this thing Cause Toyota 4x4's are cool and now all my friends can out run it.

So Lame, get over it its never going to be fast unless your into motor swaps and Turbo's

Gears will not fix it. Put a for sale sign in the window and go buy a Mustang.

My truck is re-geared but not to go fast.

Resto-noob 08-19-2011 05:45 PM

What are you looking for, exactly? Are you on the pavement 90% of the time, 100%?

Step down to 235/75s on an aluminum rim and your 4Runner will be snappier. It won't look as cool, but it'll take off and stop better. The weight savings between steel wheels with 31s and aluminum and 235s or even 30X9.5 is substantial.

Lower gears (numerically higher than 4.10) will make the truck quicker but not faster.

Quick= acceleration.
Fast= top speed.

Do you need the 31s? Dropping tire size has the same effect as lowering gears.

Do you go off roading at all?

Yes I do but more on road than off

Resto-noob 08-19-2011 06:29 PM

Save the 31s for off roading and buy some aluminum rims with smaller road friendly tires. It will be a seventh son cheaper than gears front and rear. Have you seen what gears and install cost?

No what around do they cost

xxxtreme22r 08-19-2011 06:58 PM

less then a set of front/rear gears when including install cost. Factory tire size is on the door jam, but not all 31" tire trucks had the 31's listed. To see which gears you have in there now assuming they were never changed by a previous oner is also on the door jam. should see a code like, G144, G254, G294 etc etc.

SCToy 08-19-2011 07:54 PM

Don't bother with turboing a 3.slow, just 3.4l swap it, it's cheaper, easier and I'll bet you that it makes more power.

SCToy 08-19-2011 07:55 PM

fyi 4.88s and 31s is pretty quick, but don't think you'll ever get in the fast lane again. Tops out at about 65 at a reasonable rpm, ask me how I know :facepalm:
