TRANSFER CASE (slipping/regearing) QUESTIONS

Hey guys just a few questions here. I bought a 1985 4Runner a few months ago and plan on building it up as a trail rig. Not too heavy on the crawling aspect but still able to get where I need it to go..

Anyways, I noticed that when in 4 low a few of the gears "pop out" when I put the clutch in, and I dont seem to have reverse either in 4 low. I was thinking about re-gearing my low range t-case to 4.70:1 and was wondering if the gear slippage was due to my transfer case or the transmission.

Since it never slips in 2wd Im guessing its the low. So will re-gearing fix this issue or do I need to go deeper into my drive train?

Thanks for reading!

Reverse is in the transmission .

Not sure just what you mean by popping out??

Worn bearings can cause it to jump out of gear

How many miles are on the rig? Does it look like the PO kept up on the rig? Has there been a new clutch put in? What the trany fluid look and smell like. If the fluid smells burnt then you could have issues. If the rig was kept up on then we hope it's something simple. But all too often these 30 year old trucks get ignored for 30 years and then we get them and get to bring them back to their glory. I would first check you trany fluid. What color is it if you smear a dab on a white piece of paper. An what does it smell like?

But I get reverse in all other gear configurations? And I mean they jump out out gear.

It has 230xxx PO was an idiot, he stripped the inside and screwed up the wiring so bad I'm not sure I can make sense of it much less fix it.
I will have to check the tranny fluids today. I just put a new clutch in last weekend so hopefully I don't have to go dropping the tranny again for a rebuild... :/
But I guess it would be better to fix all drive train problems/upgrades all at once.

Ok when in 4 Low range do all the forward gears work??

Does your transmission jump out of gear or the transfer case??

Did it work before you had the shifters out to do the clutch??

Get the shifters in correct ??
