Toyota FAQ
Mods please sticky:
After some discussion in another thread I decided it would be a good idea to get a FAQ thread up and running here on YT. There's a ton of info on this board and I realize that it can be hard to find things by searching so here it all is nice and organized. Feel free to add more as this is just a start. What kind of Toyota do I have: 4Runners: 1st GEN: 1984-1989 2nd GEN: 1990-1995 3rd GEN: 1996-2002 4th GEN: 2003-current Pickups: 1st GEN: 1964-1968 (Stout) 2nd GEN: 1969-1974 (Hilux) 3rd GEN: 1975-1978 4th GEN: 1979-1983 5th GEN: 1984-1988 6th GEN: 1989-1995 7th GEN: 1995 1/2-current (Tacoma) Deckplate Mod: https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech.../deckplate.htm http://www.wattora.com/mods/deckplate/ http://www.top4runners.com/ja/perf.html#deckplate https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&highlight=ISR ISR: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&highlight=ISR https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&highlight=ISR 3.0- https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech/blu_intake/blu.htm 3.4- https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech...r/96runner.htm https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech...take/albpm.htm Extended Diff Breather: https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech...r/breather.htm How much lift do I need for x tires: For the IFS Toyota pickups and 4Runners ('86-'95) the following tire/lift combinations apply: 31x10.50-will fit fine, no mods 32x11.50-should fit, may require minor adjustments 33x9.50/10.50-may fit w/ no lift on stock wheels w/ minor fender trimming and torsion bar adjustment 33x12.50-on 15x8/4.75" backspace wheels needs 1" body lift, and front torsion bar lift (1"-2") or 1.5" ball joint spacer and some sort of rear suspension lift (such as longer spring shackles or a coil spring spacer) to level the truck, plus some fender trimming. Here is a picture of this combination showing the minor front fender trimming needed to fit the tires. Conventional wisdom suggests a full 4" IFS lift for this wheel/tire combination, but using a combination of milder lift components will produce the same end result that will function as well if not better than the taller all-in-one lift kit and at less cost. And in case you think this won't work, take a look at this very combination in action in 4x4Wire's Hot Toys write-up on Don West's '94 pickup. 35x12.50 on 15x8 w/ 3.75" backspace wheels needs 4" IFS suspension lift plus 2" body lift for good fit. Many IFS lifts require less backspacing on the wheels to clear the dropped A-arms, this in turn pushes the wheels/tires out farther from the body, making tire/body contact more of an issue. The 2" body lift can help reduce rubbing. Less lift may be possible with more fender trimming. (from 4crawler.com) For Tacomas and could work with 3rd gen Runners: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...ireChart.shtml Extending Brake lines: Toyota Fittings are 10mm x 1.00 thread with an inverted flare. ProComp #7210 are Longer than stock Stainless Steel brake lines. (set of three) One piece 23" long replacement brake line for the front is Napa #38688 This turns out to be a front line from a 90-96 Nissan 300ZX if you wanna get one from somewhere else. The flexible rear brake line (goes from the hardline to the rear axle) is commonly used for extending the front and rear brakes lines since it has one male end and one female end. So when these lines are swapped inline with the stock lines, and you will have plenty of room for extra lift and flexy suspensions. The Napa #38256 is the stock length (19" long) rear flexible brake hose. Napa #36881 is 11" long if you need one a bit shorter. Or you can buy a second stock brakeline and and use the 2 together for the extra length, Napa # 38796. Wealth of 3rd gen 4Runner information: www.sonoransteel.com
Wealth of 1st gen 4Runner information: www.4crawler.com I second searching on the POR FAQ thread for older model Toyotas...tons of 411 there. :guitar: |
Good job silver truck, very impressive.
Here's our other FAQ we've got: https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/4runner_faq.htm |
awesome, 5 kudos for you for doing that. another thing i would suggest is something for the threads on backspacing?? or something for the "can i fit rims from a 01 on a 96" or visa versa. maybe those don't fit in here, but just a suggestion.
edit: nevermind the backspacing idea, as you already covered it in the lift. awesome. |
:bigok: :good:
thanks! :drink: |
i think the pickup generation labelling is wrong. it should probably just include the hilux line('69-95 in the US), 1st gen would be '69-72, 2nd gen would be '73-78, 3rd gen, 79-83 and so on. most guys go by 4x4s though so that gets kinda confusing.

Great post, tons of useful links! The 4Runner chronology seems right on.

http://star-motoring.com/services/pr...2005.html&sec= http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=102944 http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,...8a2021,00.html Toyota North America's own generation listing is confusing, but they do list the 2005 truck as the 7th generation light truck and 2nd generation Tacoma. http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_li...toy_lighttruck I agree that reference using 4WD confuses things. But Toyota in 1979 did market the 4WD pickup as the son of a Land Cruiser as though it was a new model and that's about when they started selling like crazy. |
It would be so much easier if everyone would just quit using the "gen" term and instead just state the model & year. There would never be any confusion. There was a guy posting not long ago who couldn't figure out why he couldn't find any parts for this rig - imagine asking the guy at the parts counter for "deckplate mod for a second gen toyota!"

Pickups: 1st GEN: 1964-1968 (Stout) 2nd GEN: 1969-1974 (Hilux) 3rd GEN: 1975-1978 4th GEN: 1979-1983 5th GEN: 1984-1988 6th GEN: 1989-1995 7th GEN: 1995 1/2-current (Tacoma) well, if your looking at the whole wide world... most people in the US refer to p/u like this 1st gen: up to 1983 2nd gen: 84-88 3rd gen: 89-95 4th gen: 95.5-04 5th gen: 05 (bas add btw!) |

is the ˟˟˟˟˟... :banger: thanks man |
bump for old great post.

:bump: again
I edited the section above that points to the Tech Articles. We no longer update the old webpage style, as we are now using the forums own format for the articles. Mucho easier on me. |

hey sweet that helps  :saw:

These are good FAQ's, Toyota timeline year by year specs and info regarding stock equipment. Let's not forget about the Trekker now either, in that timeline.
