Timing w/o a Timing Light

I know I need a light to do it right, but...I can't afford to buy one right at the moment, and I'll be replacing my distributer today. What's the best way to get it "good enough" until I can afford to either bring it to a shop for the timing or buy a timing light?

Just set it until it starts pinging, and back it off a little bit.
