THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent to Loctite Blue 242

Did a tad of research, and I believe the Loctite equivalent to the FSM-specified Three Bond 1324 is Loctite Blue. According to the technical details, both are removable, anaerobic (don't need oxygen to cure), medium strength, with methacrylate base. Now I don't have to wonder anymore.

Three Bond 1324:
  • more info: http://www.threebond.co.jp/en/produc...300/1324n.html
  • removable: "For bonding and sealing of metal screw structures that may need to be removed later"
  • anaerobic: "Anaerobic"
  • methacrylate base: "Methacrylic acid ester monomer"
  • medium strength: "mid-strength"

Loctite Blue 242:
  • more info: http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/t_l...r-Blue-242.htm
  • removable: "locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools"
  • anaerobic: "cures when confined in the absence of air"
  • mythacrylate base: "Methacrylate ester"
  • medium strength: "Medium strength"

Good call. I agree in full.

Had to go back and edit a previous thread where I speculated it was the same as the red.

Both wrong. I was right in thinking red, because Three Bond 1324 actually IS RED! And it's actually ~ equivalent to Loctite 271(according to Toyota, see link below)! And it's also MUCH stronger than Loctite 242!

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
LOCTITE® 271™ provides the following product
characteristics:
Technology: Acrylic
Chemical Type: Dimethacrylate ester
Appearance (uncured): red LMS
Fluorescence: Positive under UV light LMS
Components: One component - requires no mixing
Viscosity: Low
Cure: Anaerobic
Secondary Cure: Activator
Application: Threadlocking
Strength: High

LOCTITE® 271™ is designed for the permanent locking and
sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when
confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal
surfaces and prevents loosening and leakage from shock and
vibration. Typical applications include the locking and sealing
of large bolts and studs (up to M25 ).

ThreeBond 1344N Anaerobic sealant

ThreeBond 1344N is a fast-curing, anaerobic, low-strength sealant. It does not cure in air. Rather, when it penetrates into narrow gaps in metal structures, it quickly reacts and cures by polymerization. Thus it prevents screws from looseing and seals them.

Features
· Is a fast-curing, mid-strength sealant.
· Cures well at low temperature.
· Provides excellent bonding of chemically stable materials, such as plated materials.
· Has thixotropy and low viscosity, and therefore has excellent workability.
· Is lubricative.

Uses
For bonding and sealing of metal screw structures that may need to be removed later.

Properties

Before curing

Test items Units 1344N Test method Remarks
Major component - Methacrylic acid ester monomer
Color - Clear blue 3TS-201-01
Viscosity - mPa s(cP) 600(600) 3TS-210-01
Specific gravity - 1.07 3TS-213-02
Flash point °C - 100 or over

After curing

Test items Units 1344N Test method Remarks
Major component - Polymethacrylic resin
Color - Blue 3TS-201-01
Applicable temperature range °C -40-150
Breakdown torque - N m(kgf cm) 16.3(166) 3TS-306-01 24 hr at 25°C
NOT ~ equivalent to Three Bond 1324!

Heh, thanks MudHippy, just needed this info again for my flywheel. This thread came up first on Google when I searched "three bond 1324" (quotes included). I guess we got some links.

Looks like your Loctite 542 is actually for pipe threads; as you pasted, "designed for the locking and sealing of metal
pipes and fittings".

This site thinks that it's equivalent to either 242 or 243, depending on the strength needed, 115 or 180 inch-lbf. 3bond 1344 is 144 inch-lbf, 1324N is 239 inch-lbf.

So now I'm leaning toward the 243 for this application. Looks like it'll cost at least $20 to get a little bottle.
