wondering 'cause i'm thinking about buying this truck. good price, but why would somebody do that to their 4runner? did toyota ever make them like this?

littlecommando 12-16-2008 09:00 AM

they look like my stock ones from my 85

i think they are stock

freddy 12-16-2008 09:01 AM

They look factory to me, but i am not sure.

landozion 12-16-2008 09:57 AM

Pretty sure those are stock SR5 flares.

Ron Helmuth 12-16-2008 10:51 AM

yes those are stock, they are chrome trim pieces that are useless as a "flare"

I have those on my ride

X-AWDriver 12-16-2008 11:11 AM

There were the no flares on the base and then the SR5s had either the chrome/rubber strip or the skinny black plastic flares or the painted widebody on the Limiteds.

stagger_lee 12-16-2008 11:19 AM

Whatever they are, its time to take em off, along with those running boards. :hillbill:

Elton 12-16-2008 11:30 AM

yep those are oem i had some on my truck tell a tree decided i should take them off and ripped one off so the rest came off looks much cleaner imho

I love a trimless white or silver 3rd Gen 4runner. Probably my favorite of all generations

deines97runnah 12-16-2008 01:58 PM

Thanks man. Sliders will get put on in the spring with the 33's and some armor. But i love that i have no flares, only problem with that is i have to run 10.5's or 11.5's because the state law requires that you wheels can only go 1/2'' outside of your fenders.

stagger_lee 12-16-2008 02:00 PM

Even with mud flaps?

deines97runnah 12-16-2008 02:17 PM

yup 75% sure

Ron Helmuth 12-16-2008 08:08 PM

well stated

This thread is based on 3rd gen 4Runners, not 2nd gens.

All dependant on the sub-generation (96-98, 99-00, 01-02) of the 3rd generations.
Seems like sometimes it was a crap shoot on what you got yet for some sub-gens certain combo's were more prevalent.

X-AWDriver 12-17-2008 04:52 AM

The base models did have options and I think the skinny black flares could be had on the base models.

Hmmm,I think that chrome trim might be aftermarket and i don't remember 4Runners having the rubber door trim to protect for door dinks.
