Test for bad head gasket

I just got back in to Toyota's with a purchase of a 94 3.0 SR5 with 208000 miles.(Good deal from my brother in law). MY question deals with the head gaskets. The engine does not run but I think the problem might have to do with the cam belt change. He said that the engine did not run well after the change and it back fired a few times. At this time the cam gears, the belt, and the left valve cover is off. I took the cam off and it and the bushings look ok. Now, my question is, can I do a compression test, or a cylinder leakdown test with air pressure, to get an indication as to the status of the head gaskets. I would preferr not to pull the engine and do a tear down if I do not have to.

Sorry about the long post.
Dennis
