tacoma rear axle swaps?
my 1992 toyota pickup v6 rear end i leaking and the pinion bearing is worn slap out.
i think im just gonna swap the axle out for another one.
i found a 1998 toyota tacoma v6 rear end (still checking if it has the e-locker) but my question is
what is the width of the tacoma axle vs. the pickup rear axle and if the tacoma axle is too wide will the taco 3rd member fit in the pickup housing?
thanks.

I'm pretty certain you can't swap it in & I KNOW the 3rd member from a Tacoma will NOT fit in the hold housing.
Best bet is to find a like replacement or at least 3rd member. Make sure your bearings are good; most rear diff trouble is caused by low fluid, which affects the bearings & seals as well....

If your axle seals aren't leaking, the wheel bearings are most likely fine. If the third is leaking, it could be an old saturated paper gasket, diff studs starting to pull from the housing, pinion seal and/or bearing, or any combination of these. A clogged breather can also cause leaks.
If the Tacoma third is NOT an e-locker, the gears match your front diff, and your axle seals aren't leaking, I would just swap thirds. Either way, be sure to use FIPG instead of a paper gasket for the third and you might as well install a stud eliminator kit while you're in there:

The axle assembly will not just swap in but the Tacoma third member WILL fit if it's not an e-locker. If it is an e-locker, some minor fabrication is required but it can still be adapted to the older housings fairly easily. More info here:

86-95 pickup axles are 58" wide, Tacoma's had two sizes, 58.5" and 60".

First of all, first gen Tacomas only have one axle width, 60".
Second of all, the 8" Elocker diff will fit an older 8" with some major fabrication and welding.
Third, the Tacoma 8.4" non Elocker open diff DOES NOT fit into an 8" housing. Read: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

Tacoma axle uses the same brakes and third member as previous pickup axle, somewhere during Tacoma production the rear axle changed from 58 1/2" to 60".

A factory option on 3rd Gen. 4Runners, Tacoma 4x4's, and Tacoma PreRunner 4x2's is an electric locking rear differential. This diff is a 4-pinon design based on the Turbo/V6 8" diff and uses the same gear sets and bearings (except for the large bearing near the locking mechanism).
These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified (see this article for more info).

3 - Implied by #1. Upon reading the link you referenced above, I see that there is some contradicting info. I admit I have not personally worked with an open Tacoma diff and if really doesn't fit in the earlier 8" housing, I apologize for the bad info (derived from 4x4wire).

You consider it major fab, some consider it relatively easy. To each their own.
