Spark plug wire differences... *thin vs thick*

My 1992 4-runner has these 5mm skinny-ass spark plug wires, yet my buddys engine (1991) has big thick ass wires. The cap and rotors are also different...

anyone know why toyota changed to a design not as good? the thin wires are also 2-3times more costly than the thicker wires. I ordered up a cap/rotor/wires for the older style engine and i am going to swap my coil pack to the older style. Does anyone see a issue with this?

They probably changed the insulator material to have higher electrical insulating properties, but made the overall insulation thinner the shed heat better...heat increases resistance, which is no good for plug wires or coils as it cause them to breakdown faster....just my thought on why they changed to a "thinner" wire.

Good Post!

hmm....

I was wondering the same thing... I was at Pick-N-Pull and saw the thick plug wires (mine are skinny) and was wondering whether to replace mine.

Now I think I'll keep the skinny ones on my truck and use the thick ones as a spare.....

My bet is you were looking at aftermarket stuff.
Use OEM.
