regear question

Well, I picked up gears and lockers and had them set up, so I am ready for installation. I keep seeing posts about having to balance the driveshaft if you don't put it back together where you mark the driveshaft to third member. If you are swapping third members you cannot do this, so do I need to go have the driveshaft balanced after swapping third members?

Doesn't matter how you bolt it up, the only way the driveshaft would need to be balanced is if it was unbalanced before you tore it apart.....

So you dont need to balance it

question part 2:
I know that 5.29s are the preferable gear for 35s and I have read it a million times. I got a great deal on 4.88s from a member here, so it will be 4.88s for sure. I'm pretty sure that I could squeeze 35s under my truck with longer shackles... need to redo lift anyways, because these downey springs don't flex at all, or the stock shackles are really stopping them from flexing...
My question is, how slow are 4.88s with 35s. Would it be like 4.10s with 31s or my stock 81 with 3.90s with 31s, which is just too damn slow... Just wondering if anyone else is running 35s with 4.88s on a 22r. Would that stay with the 35s or go back to 33s if they could do it over.

i had 4.88 with 35's with a v6 and re geared to 5.29 a 22r might be a dog but i did drive my old 88 with 36in.tsl's for 3years with stock gears. i would put them in its better than what you got and if you already have everything why not. or sell them and buy some 5.29's from scotty or wabbit about 280 for both

already got both my 4.88s (brand new) set up with aussies (brand new), so unless someone wants to trade, I don't really want to invest into another set of gears and lockers. I'm definitely going to use the 4.88s over my stock 3.90s, I guess the question is; Would I regret going to 35s or just stick with the 33s?

camo31_10.50 01-25-2011 12:40 PM

should be about the same as 31's on 4.10's.

blake.nemitz 01-25-2011 12:47 PM

uuggh 3.90's yea youll feel some pep with 4.88 how is it with the 3.90's right now, 4th and 5th useless?

SCToy 01-25-2011 12:53 PM

well right now on 31s and 3.90s I can kinda hold 55 on a hill in 4th, and 5th is downhill and flat only. I really don't use 5th much... It's just really slow unless you want to completely murder fuel economy right now. I mostly avoid freeways. I'll be swapping in the 4.88s this afternoon in the rear and the front when I finish collecting parts.

Well, I have got the new third in, but it's getting dark and I can't find all the torque specs I need in my FSM... I know should have thought about it earlier, but was excited to not be so damn slow....
Can't find the specs for the 4 bolts that hold the hub onto the axle.
and lost the page I had the specs for the driveshaft to the rear flange. Any help would be appreciated. Still searching the FSM

seeing 54 lbs/ft on the driveshaft, is this correct?

SCToy 01-26-2011 06:39 AM

Feels a lot better, but my top speed is about 80 on the speedo, which is probably more like 70. And that's turning like 4000 rpm so no long trips for me until I get some new shoes.

Umm, bigbluepile has a 22re, 5 speed, 4.88's and 35's. He has never complained about it being a problem. I need to downshift on the pass before he does. 22re with 200k, 5 speed, 4.56's and 31's. He also has a rebuilt motor. So if you have a tired motor, you will feel the effects more.

for the four bolts i dont know the spec but i just cranked mine on as tight as i could with a double wrench technique
