My brother broke the sleeve yoke on his 02 4Runner Sport 4x2. We were going to replace the U-joints and I told him to lay off it until then. Well 90 MPH later and we have broken U-joint and I suspect the rear shaft to be bent. I notice I am supposed to mark the slip yoke before removing it but the new one will not be marked. Is this going to be trial and error, i.e. have to rotate the slip, bolt and try out, rinse repeat if needed?

I don't look often enough to explain...and my truck is much older so it's hard to say if you've got the same setup, but there aren't many ways to put it back on wrong, and only one right way, so it won't be too hard. Best thing to do is take a photo. It'll be obvious that way when you go to put it back together. There's an "in phase" and "out of phase". When you know what it's supposed to look like, it's pretty easy to tell.

Provided you have all the bolts removed either a screwdriver to compress the slip joint an inch or so. But other swear by hitting it with a big rubber mallet. Which ever method you choose make sure it doesn't land on you and hit you in the face.

I just use a 2x2 and a really big rubber mallet or a 2x4 for a mallet.

call Marlin Crawler up and get a new one, saves you a bunch of hassles. FIll out the form and fax it them so you get a good one the first time.

you only need to mark the halves of the drive shaft when you pull them apart so that you can put them back in the same orientation because that's how the drive shaft was balanced. since you're repairing your driveshaft, this no longer applies since your drive shaft will be unbalanced. you definitely want your rear drive shaft balanced, so take it to a drive line shop. it's quick and cheap. if you've got some paint handy, after you get it back, paint a dot on each half so you'll always know which way they go together. when you reinstall your drive shaft bolts, be sure to use a thread locker (e.g. loc-tite).
