rear diff hose
is it necessary to hook a hose to the diff breather and if yes where do you want to put the hose
|
Only if you plan on going into water deeper than the axles, which imho is yes you need one. Search differential breather and it willbring up so many results.
To be frank, you buy a nissan or yota fitting and some vacuum or fuel safe hose and the pieces and hook them up and runthe house to the highest point. In my case I have decided if I do it with the hose I am gonna runthe rear up into behind rear tail light and the front in the engine bay. |
if you plan on doing any deep water crossing then it is. put it up near the gas filler hole, if you have water that deep, your diff is the least of your worries.
|
whats my biggest worry then?
|
if you go through deep water and suck water into the diff it will ruin the oil and you can blow the seals.

this is how i did mine. http://www.wattora.com/mods/diffbreather/index.html

thanks man, well if i put a hose on will i be saved from blowing the seals and also should i replace the oil in the diff now?
|
If you can;t remember the last time you did it, yes you should...
I change mine ever 15K... and I am about 7K over doo now... But just got it change since It was in for the rear seal work... I plan on running mine into the engine bay... |

Also know me for bringin in a 4Runner with a very muddy undercarage for inspection... The Stealership down in DE knows me as the Kid who has to wait for his mom to make a desicion... They call me like 30times waitng to see what I want to do when i figure out the problem... I have to call around and get other prices, they need to be frickin curdious, they didn't even offer a rental or anything!! I just get a very bad vibe everytime I walk into a stealership... Even back in 2002 when stepdad was going to buy his 02' Sport Edition Runner... I did a little research... Ended up knowing more about that Runner or actually anything about a car in general then the actual salesman... I think I just put off a vibe to them.... |
Crappy stealerships, one by me is top notch everytime I been. my T100 was serviced almost exclusively there by the PO since his wife worked there for a long time (she didnt anymore). Thats how I have a brand new block with 50k on a 186k truck :)...
I believe thier is a nissan fitting that works better, could go to a nissan stealership for it. Honestly your mom needs to let you take care of the car, unless she is paying for everything-if she isnt then its up to you imho. As for stealerships in general, I went to look at the runners, tacos and tundras a few times before i got my truck. I laid it out plain and simple to the salesmen-I know my stuff, I want x model with x option, no have me no care about other vehicles.. Needless to say he wanted to sell me a 2wd tundra..I left. "oh you dont need a 4x4, this 2wd is more than enough!" Which reminds me, damn it I am going to my mechanic this morning to replace my other caliper. Shoulda replaced both-but saving money was the goal when he did the other one. |
She was forkin the bill...
But they couldn't get in contact with her... Only me... See my uncle got a great deal on his 05' Sport Edition V8 4Runner... He went and told the salesman what I TOLD HIM to look for in a 4Runner and then a color that he was intrested... He told the salesman if he didn't get what he was looking for he was out... He got what he was looking for... And now he is a Proud Yota owner... Reason he went with that runner is cause I told him a newer 03' Sport Edition isn't really a SPort Edition unless it has that V8 Under It... That V8 makes it a sport I think.... YOU ALWAYS NEED A 4X4!!! I am sorry I do not understand the 2X4 deal... If it is bigger than a full size sedan and has either a bed or large cargo area, it has to be 4X4..... I heard about that nissan fitting, I will have to look into it... |
Well you dont always need 4x4, I can attest to owning a rear locked F150 with 250 running gear (it was custom ordered in 91 by my grandfather) that went alot of places. It was just a work truck so he didnt want to have 4x4 added in.
FYI: was a custom f150 xlt lariat (top model) but had all 250 gear under it with HD suspension, brakes, man trans, etc. Shame I smashed into some moron in a benz that jumped out in front of me and slammed on his brakes. Totaled his car and the 150 had electrical problems I gave up on. That truck went alot of places, but boy did I wish i had 4x4. |
I use 1/8" NPT fittings from the hardware store:

yea we do a lot of sloshing thru mud puddles, so i guess this would be a good idea, ill put it on my list of stuff to do
