I have changed everything in my 88 4WD pickup. Rear brake shoes and brake hardware, slave cylinder, brake drum, axle bearing and seal. Also have freed up the e-brake, and adjusted it a bit looser. Everything has been changed except the backing plate. Still, it makes a clunk noise out of the passenger side wheel almost every time I hit the brakes.
Sometimes it grabs and makes the noise when the brakes aren't even engaged. The only thing I haven't messed with is the LSPV.
Has anybody had this happen? Thanks!

 

Did this vehicle come with rear ABS?

 

No ABS on the 88.

 

It's cheap and easy move your valve if your not at stock ride height any more or if it look like someone has already moved it. Have you put a vacuumed bleeder on you breaks to make sure there is not a bubble in the middle. Really long lines going to the back axel. I found a bubble in my last Toy that was there for god knows how long. Just started trouble shooting one day, why mine would break seemingly harder on the left side. If you have access to a good bleeder and a few bottles of break fluid. Go for it. It will eliminate a possibility and its not going to hurt anything.

Thanks, I did do a vacuum bleed, after many failures with other methods. It much improved the pedal height, but this clunk sound keeps coming back. Today it was worse, like a brake shoe that kept snagging. I'll take another look when it stops raining.
I might do another vacuum bleed just for the joy of it.
