Post-Drain Problems

I have spent the last week out of town doing a job from hell. I planned to drain my auto trans and replace the filter and refill. Simply enough. Only problem was that the sway bar brackets had to be cut off and those are apparently impossible to find. Anyway, got that cleared but now I have a problem. My transmission is slipping. The filter was replaced with the seal and the pan and gasket done correctly. Fluid has been added and the transmission is slipping. There is no specific rhyme or reason to it. It seems to respond just fine sometimes and other times it engages on a short delay. And I'm not talking every few times I drive it. We're talking every two or three seconds. So there's the worst-case scenario where the previous owner took horrible care and now that I've drained the fluid it no longer has that nice gritty fluid to help it run, but I'm really hoping there's some other reason. Any ideas? The only thing I can see is that I didn't quite get the upper half of the dipstick tube to seat properly into the lower half and so I'm wondering if it's sucking air through there. Could that cause what I'm describing? Any and all help/ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!
