Well I believe you have 4.30's gears now...I think the 22re auto has those. My 5spd has 4.10's my 3.0 auto has 4.88's (factory 31" tire option).

Check those links...If you are going to 35's on a 22re I'm thinking you want at least 4.88's but I think 5.29's would be better.

Me I don't like auto's So in my 3.0 I'll be keeping the 4.88's and swapping out the auto trans then 35's won't be an issue.

You'll want 5.29's. Even there, the 35's are going to make it a dog.

hello everyone I am new to this site and for the most part new to pre taco toyota I am an wner or 96 taco and at of yesterday and 84 pretaco I have a few questions if anyone can please help...here goes, I bought a 84 toyota p/u without the engine trans or tcase I am wanting to just put it back together stock bc I think It ill be the easiest fastest way to hit the trail, I need to know which engines will bolt up to the factory motor mounts ( 20r, 22R) will they both go it the same? also what yr range of trans and T-case can I use with those engines? I would really like to go with a 22R but I know that the factory engine for that yr is a 20R. any help is greatly apperciated thanks guys btw im not a newbie when It comes to auto repair im a certified lexus technician and work at a lexus dealership so feel free to explain in full detail thanks again

84 pickups came with the 22r from the factory. There are a few options for the transmission but for my money i would install the w56 (very common) or r151 trans if available. Do some searching you'll find out what you need .

Put in a W56. 22r or 22re will bolt in pretty well.

W56 came out of the tacos right? and either a 22R or 22RE will bolt right in??

I think it's interesting that the Wiki article notes the 22re appearing in August of '82. I never see anything about 22re's in 4x4s prior to 1985. I bought a hardcopy of an '84 FSM strictly for straight axle info but was delighted to find that it also had 22re info as well as 22r info. Perhaps it was only 2wd trucks that received the first 22res but I really don't know. Motor mount placement will be the same either way but if you go the 22re route you will also need to make sure you have or can acquire the ECM stuff that goes with it.

from what ive experienced and have read that unless you get bigger than 33s than 4:88 is plenty low enough.

which w56? I saw on a chart that there are w56A w56B w56C w56D w56E there all the same except for the shift top and forward? and this tranny will bolt right up to the 22R?? which T-case will work with this I cant seem to find a straight answer about that? thanks for your help

They will all bolt up to the 22R, commonly used with the 22REs. Will also bolt up to any of the RF1A gear driven t-cases, which is probably what you have now. So just mach up the style t-case shifter with what you have now. If top shift, then A or B model, if forward shift, C,D,E model would be the easiest setup.

another dumb question but how do you tell the difference in top and forward because this thing came with nothing but suspension and tires I do however have the shifters there straight like a normal manual and the hole for them is on top like a normal manual thanks for your time again

this thread has been a good read, using the first post for plan of attack. I have an 87 Xtra-cab 4x4 with 31x10.50x15 and stock gears. I did some wheeling with a few friends and like what I have, but did have a couple of problems with traction. Last week I ordered a Grizzly locker for the rear, since I can't afford the ARB, that will come later for the front and rear. I don't plan on heavy duty rock crawling, but want to be able to motor along on the trails and roads that I pick to travel.

Hands down, 33's are the way to go. more clearance can't hurt, especially if your like me and and never know where you'll find your self off-roading next till the last minute.

33" Tires actually fit?
 

1) I love the first page of this thread and wouldn't be doing tires first except that they need replacement now. So...
2) Will 33x1050's BFG KM2's fit under my stock '85 pickup with stock wheels?

I hate to be the guy asking that question, but there it is. The next size down that I've found is 32", but it's only available in 11.50, which I would think would be more troublesome than the 33x1050's. Am I wrong? I'm currently running 30x9.5's. After replacing the tires I plan on lockers and more armor, then gears. I put the links for the tires I'm looking at below.

I'd go for the 33x10.5, they will work well on your stock rims. You may have to remove the front mudflap, and/or hammer the pinch weld down. Be aware that you will lose a little power on highway hills w/ the stock gears and 33" diam. tires. A little.

On the solid axle trucks, a little harder fitting taller tires stock than on an IFS truck from what I have seen. Here are 33x9.50s on stock rims w/ 3/5" lift:

Problem is the front spring shackle and axle moves back under compression and you get tire rubbing at the rear of the wheel well. I had to hammer/trim that plus add a 1" longer shackle and a 1" body lift to clear those tires on my '85.

Best to measure clearance with your current tires compared to the new ones and see:

You seem like the right guy to ask this to...If I want to run 30 or 31's will I need to modify anything on my 85? It currently has 235x75r15's. I'd like to go bigger but am worried about the taller tire rubbing as well as the long term effect it will have on my engine, diff, etc.

30s should be fine, 31s may fit if you stick to a narrower tire and stock wheel:

I had a buddy w/ an '85 and he had some aftermarket wheel, likely 15x8 and 31x10.50s and he needed to do a little work to clear those wheels/tires up front. An inch longer front shackle was needed.
