New to Toyota pick ups
I’m going to look at a 1987 Toyota 4x4 with a 22re 5 speed manual tomorrow. Just want to know the things to look at while buying one of these. Also it has the ac system but no belt, no that leaves me thinking that the compressor or something down the line isn’t working. The current owner said he bought the truck that way. Said it has 118,000 miles. He’s asking 4800 is that a fair price? Im not new to cars, I’m 19 and built myself a 1974 Chevelle but I’m looking for a fun daily with 4x4 and a stick. Thanks guys |
A lot depends on where you are as to what to look for. West Coast rust isn't that bug of a deal compared to the rust belt. Also depending on what your skill set is vs what needs to be done. Can you weld? Are you good with electrical? Do you have time for any of that? Most "clean perfect" trucks are going to need at least a $1000 thrown at them for neglected maintenance.
But the very basic 22re thing to look for is the timing chain. You can inspect it by pulling the valve cover and looking down the front of the motor. It was factory with plastic guides. When those snap the chain now will slap the timing cover and slowly wear a hole in to a coolant passage. Now you have to replace the chain and guide. Not very hard but can be frustrating. Also you should pull the oil pan at the same time to clean the debris from the oil strainer. Also when replacing the timing cover you meed to make sure the block deck height is the same as the new cover, ie has the block been decked before?. |

22re is a really good engine. But any good engine can fail. When buying my first Toyota pickup I made the mistake of not taking it on the highway going through all the gears up shifting and downshifting. From 3rd to 2nd it would grind bad. Go through all the gears, check oil and cap, make sure it isn’t smoking. My last 22re had a very bad oil burning issue, watch exhaust when you get on it, you will see blue smoke. But as long as there isn’t an abnormally loud knocking, and it doesn’t overheat I’d say go for it. Look for things you can use to your advantage when talking him down, any flaws with the vehicle. 22re with that low of miles will last a lot longer if it has been maintained correctly. |
You don`t say where you are maybe someone is close at hand that could help inspect the truck.
Pictures are a great help . To me for that amount of money it would have to be perfect with new tires !! The fact it has AC the does not work has me wondering what else has been let go. |
