Basically I am building a 83 yota 4X4 with my 9 year old son and when we got the truck it had a cracked block. I found an 87 22r short block and bought it. Im just wondering what differences there are between blocks. I know the water pump is different and a oil pressure sensor port needs tapped out, but will all my accessories bolt right on the new block? Is the water pump spacing the same? will my old crank pulley bolt onto the new block? Any other suggestions? I also know the timing chains are differenty as well as the guides so I was planning on using the 87 cover and chain with the 83 head. Any suggestions?? Thank you so much.

No No No!!!

The blocks are different sizes not a whole lot but enough that it will cause all sorts of grief.

Right now i can`t remember which is the taller block the early or later one.

Ted from Engine builder is also a great source of information on these different engines between 83 and 85:jessica:

Even the timing covers will not swap.

Use the whole engine from the 87 with your electronics.

Or just find a block from a 83
