Muffler choice?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered a million times already, but here goes anyhow.

I'm driving a 1994 xcab 4x4 with 22RE. At some point I want to upgrade my exhaust system from the manifold all the way back. I'm wondering about muffler choices. I want something that will increase performance, but I don't want the truck to be loud. A friend has a Flowmaster muffler on his truck and it sounds pretty good. What other choices have people tried and what do you like or not like about them?

Does anyone run a Borla muffler? I like their mufflers, but they don't make one specifically for my truck.

Also, anyone know what might be my best options for a high flow aftermarket catalytic converter that will keep me smog legal (Portland, OR).

Thanks!

First off, Welcome to Yotatech.

Ok so as far as exhausts. I have a 1992 4runner 3vze. so obviously your truck isn't gonna sound anything like mine. I put a little over a grand into my truck's exhaust, and I know you aren't gonna wanna do that. I'll post up what my exhaust sounded like prior to getting headers and such done. Borla makes universal mufflers, like the one I purchased. Its a bit pricey though if you're up for it. As far as Cats. go with magnaflow... they're like 65-70 bucks and are still smog legal even in California. How much are you looking to spend on your exhaust? whatcha want out of it?

This is the jones muffler that I had on my truck before I bought the borla.

Here is what I run now, a Borla turbo muffler. This exact one is the one I purchased.

thanks for the welcome MaK92-4RnR.

i'm not sure how much i want to spend just yet. i definitely shouldn't have to spend as much as you did, but you never know. i want to replace the manifold with a header, the cat with a high flow cat and the muffler plus i want all 2 1/2" tubing. from what i have researched so far i hear this is one of the better ways to get some power out of the 22RE.

i'll look into those magnaflow's for sure. if they're legal in cali then they'll definitely be good up here.

i really like the sound of the borla on your truck. might be a bit louder than what i want though. have you noticed any difference in power since you installed the borla?

BIGBOCK 11-24-2009 03:56 PM

I did cat back exhaust on my 86 4runner a few years back and went with a high flow cat bumped up the pipe and Magnaflow muffler. It had a noticeable increase in horse power immediately. I sold that rig so I am not sure which Magnaflow muffler it was. Good luck.

Whatever you get, get Stainless.

:smokin: whatever you get, get Stainless.

There n echo in here.

NorthernWoodsman 11-24-2009 04:48 PM

Thanks BIGBOCK and Teuf.

i'm definitely gonna go stainless. and i'm gonna look at the magnaflow mufflers. hadn't thought of them before.

Teuf, you mention a cam change in the blurb about your truck. what do you think of the TRd stage 1 cams?

Teuf 11-24-2009 05:21 PM

Well Northern, i am not up to speed on that one, mine was a Schneider low end cam from Downey (RIP). Sorry there.

id go with a 2.25'' catback to a magnaflow 18'' muffler will sound nice and not super loud you can get a universal muffler and cat from here pretty reasonable http://hottexhaust.com

well i didnt look to see where you're at but I work @ a service shop here in Indiana, and I'm the Mech/Exhaust guy, we sell Flowmaster, VX, Goerlichs, xcelrator, And Magnaflow.

IMO Magnaflow is the best muffler/ exhaust you can buy they are kinda pricey but its all stainless construction... Here in Indiana we get some crappy weather, and that means salt on the road, I cant even fathom the number of flowmasters that I have to replace bc they rot out so fast bc they are mild steel that has been painted with very cheap paint. They also muffle the exhuast by internal baffles where the Magnaflow has a straight thru style with fiberglass type packing, inside, no louvers, just a bunch of holes in the internal pipes.. The Magnaflow is IMO is your best bet bc it will last so much longer and you can get just about any confuguration you want. Yesterday I put a single in dual out magnaflow on a '03 tundra with the 4.7, stock resonators, and it was still pretty quiet so if your worried about noise dont be. And I sell the Magnaflow for $110 each just to give you an idea. Thats my take on things but its your choice!

With stainless keep n eye on the hanger welds, Mine rusted.

Elton 11-25-2009 08:54 AM

yea i had a header and a flowmaster delta 40 on my 22re talk about loud sure it was cool when i was 16 im more into mellow sound

I second that. Summitracing.com is a pretty good supplier too, ships fast.

2.25 to an 18" would be great.

NorthernWoodsman 11-28-2009 10:57 AM

Sounds like the Magnaflow

mufflers are the ones being recommended mostly.

Are they pretty quiet? What would ya'll say the comparison is between them and Borla and Flowmaster with regards to power increase and fuel mileage?

Also, I noticed most of you are recommending 2.25" exhaust. Would 2.50" be to large? Seems a little larger would allow more flow/openness, but maybe there is a reason that everyone seems to suggest 2.25"?

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions and help with this. On my old Toyota [1985 4x4 w/22R and solid front axle] I replaced the exhaust with stock, but on my newer truck I want/need some more power and would like a little increase in fuel mileage too, but don't want a loud, racy exhaust.

I didn't want a loud ricy sound on mine so I went with a cherry bomb muffler not a glass pack muffler. It sounds good when you give it throttle and idoling

They're just really quiet with the bigger/longer mufflers... an 18 - 22" is pretty quiet, but still has a tone to it. I wouldn't go anything bigger than 2.25. 2.50 is pretty over kill for these engines, but is do able.

fulk112 11-30-2009 04:00 AM

I replaced it all from manifold back, I went with 2'' pipe to almost the end of the cab and added a 18'' glasspack ( pointed the right way), and 2'' all the way out in the stock location and my truck makes some noise when gassin' on it but it's not loud by any means...... you want loud? my supra has the stock manifold then a 2.25'' y pipe to bring it back to single ( used to have 2'' duals) and then its 3'' all the way to the fuel tank then a 6'' semi stack cut down to fit the 3'' and thats it, so yeah its noisy to say the least but I dont drive it everday

NorthernWoodsman 02-21-2011 06:17 PM

thanks for all of the replies to this old thread.

i haven't done my exhaust yet. plans are to do it late spring, early summer now. school is just too busy right now and other little money-sucking projects have popped up.

plans are:

- Doug Thorley header most likely
- Magnaflow cat and muffler
- stainless 2.25" pipe connecting it all and out the back

Cherry bomb glass packs sound decent.
I like the way mine sounds with the busted inlet.
has a low end growl haha
