mechanical to electric fuel pump??
 

hey yall Im new to the 4x4 scene and the carb deal im a EFI guy but I just recently bought a 84 truck with the 22R and I was wondering if I could block off the cam drivin fuel pump and use a external electric fuel pump?? Iv always been told EFI is better for off road or anything for that matter and I agree but my theory around this lil swap is I think the electric fuel pump could flow more fuel and keep a lil higher fuel psi. in turn maybe not bogg down the carb while the truck is leaning. has anyone done this before? Im pretty sure these fuel systems are return style can I do away with the return and just run a feed because my fuel pump was used on a mustang so I know it will flow enough but Im almost thinking it will be too much and IDK if it will work being returnless??? any help is appreciated thanks again

If you get an electric pump for a carb as most only need 4 to 5 psi as all they do is keep the fuel bowl full.

A EFI pump is going to put out up to 44psi and some after market ones a lot more.

Then you need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator

Yes you can do it but I did my most severe off roading in trucks with carbs

When the carb craps out it's not because it's leaning out, it's actually because it riches up. The float unseats the valve because of fuel slosh in the carb sending more fuel into the bowl and thus fuel dumps directly from the bowl to the horns because the fuel level ends up high. I don't know if this works on the factory aisin carbs but one trick to get a weber to perform better on inline/off camber is actually run the fuel pressure down to 1-1.5 psi instead of the recommended 3-4psi. This in turn keeps the fuel bowl level a little lower.

I had a friend who rebuilt his carb. on a old jeep. He bent his float tab to keep the bowl from filling up to the required level. (It was rumored you could get better MPG that way??) While climbing a long hill the float shut off the fuel. The engine died and he went backwards down the hill, went sideways and rolled. No top on at the time and no roll bar. Did a little permanent damage to his back.
