want mpg's?? Alcohol Injection! trust me.... pulling an easy 18-19 on my veezee with a 2gph nozzle (very small) running 50/50 meth/dH20.

ISR mod will help but exhaust headers on these do the most probably.

also make sure the upstream O2 sensor is <70k miles on it. use denso replacement. was getting 15-16mpg's when I bought it, new O2 sensor bumped it up to 20mpg's, no joke. pretty sure it was the original sensor, would have had 155k on it!!

clean lookin' runner, hope she is still going strong

It really depends on how i drive it. I had a load of almost 800# of rock in the back, the family and dog, coming back from my parents (about an hour away via interstate) and got 18 mpg doing 60. Going easy on the skinny pedal, I could manage around 22-23 in daily driving. Put my foot into it, and I'd get 17.

I run an 18 mile section of interstate to work, and driving at 55-60 mph sucked when Prius's would pass me. I'd get mad, and let it unwind, and she'd crank up to 75-85 mph no problem, but I could almost watch the gas needle drop.

Just got the truck back on Saturday. Filled up and drove a whole tank. In SF on the highway and just up and down the coast a bit. Getting on it quite a bit. And doin 80 and 90 on the freeway. (it wouldn't go that fast before!) First tank I got 17mpg.

It had a lot of problems though. The timing belt was only about 1/2 wide the rest had been shaved off because the pulleys were filled up with permatex. The water pump was shot. Replaced it. The valve covers were leaking so we pulled those off. then since the intake manifold was off we decided to pull the heads off. They were fouled up pretty bad. 225,000 miles. They just cleaned the tops of the pistons and the heads really well scraped everything off with a razor. Should have had the heads done but didn't have time since it was Christmas and I needed the truck back.

So in all this was everything that was replaced:
head gasket
valve cover gasket
timing belt
tensioner
pulleys
waterpump
LCE header
new cv axles
Aisin Manual hubs
EBC rotors and pads
adjusted the rear brakes and Ebrake
Added some shims to the rear shocks
Swapped 3rd member to 4.56's

I'm gonna bring it back next week to finish the exhaust up and change the fluids and tune it up again.
It's running nice. Compared to what it was it's like a skinned ape now! No problem climbing the hills around home. I can stay in fifth gear in cruise control now climbing about a 6% grade which before I had to shift into 3rd for before.

Just got my first 4runner too ('94) and running through a bunch of the same concerns you've been. I appreciate you posting here and sharing. I'm thinking first upgrade, after some other basic fixes, will be the manual hubs. This is a great place to come for a do it yourselfer with minimal wrench turning background like myself.

I was born in Pacifica and did some growing up in Montara...I know Devil's Slide well (or use to). That thing was scary in bad weather.

Nice work on your runner. Keep us posted on the progress.

Bad knock sensor, need a new header back exhaust, and something is going on with the clutch.

Any advice/comments??
