Sounds like you're ready to go! I've had a couple of 3VZE's and I would say that 14 mpg is pretty good.
My last 4Runner was a 95 3.0 Auto and I was getting around 13.5 mpg mixed..
Those BFG MT's probably won't help your gas mileage any though.

I'm thinking the gas mileage will definitely go up when I install everything. The tires on it now are junk and the steering is so loose my wheels just flop around.
I've been averaging about 15 mpg all the time. Not to bad considering my other option was to buy a new truck to use for work. 15 mpg is way cheaper than a monthly payment!

So my 4runner is running pretty decent these days.....
In the last 6 weeks I changed out my rear inner and outer seals, bearings, rear brakes, all 4 shocks, the coils and torsion bars. I also changed out the tie rods and idler arm. I had it realigned, and the coolant flushed at Pep Boys. I ordered some 31x10.5 BFG MT's on some black steel wheels, had them balanced at Big O tires last week.
I have been driving about 1300 miles a week for my job, and I average about 15 mpg. I notice my oil pressure stays really low. I am using Valvoline Maxlife 10w30, because it's 13 bucks for a gal at Wally World! It was burning a little oil, so the last oil change I added some Lucas oil stabilizer. I'm 2800 miles into this oil and it hasn't burned nearly as much as it did before.
I need an exhaust system pretty bad, and one of my CV boots is torn. I'm debating doing the CV's myself or just taking it to a shop. I need to upgrade my headlights in a really bad way. These things I will try and have done in the next month.

My advice to you would be to try and do the CVs yourself. For most of the guys on this forum, it's only an hour job to do...but for someone with very little mechanical experience it'll probably take a little longer.
I'm definitely not a mechanic, I'm a college student who bought my '86 to learn to work on trucks. It took me about 4 hours because I couldn't get three of the bolts of the old CV, very frustrating!
It's really simple to do however, the only problem I had during the whole job was just getting those bolts off. Since you live in Cali and have a newer truck then me without rust I doubt you'll have those issues. Just read up on yotatech and you'll do just fine (and save yourself some $$$ too) plus when the next thing breaks on your yota you'll feel more like you should fix it yourself instead of some shop.
And having had both 4Runners with manual and automatic hubs, I would definitely upgrade to manual hubs...they're bulletproof. Especially considering how much time it sounds like you spend off road.
Good luck!

Hey thanks Nlinn... I know I could do it I just don't feel motivated to do it! I was going to go with manual hubs, but I think I decided to stick with ADD. I use my 4wd alot in the rain coming up and down the 1 on the coast. There is this cliff called Devils Slide I drive every day to get home. It's scary doing 15mph! I've thought about this alot and when it's raining I don't really want to get out to lock the hubs.
I think before I dig into the front end I will be replacing my headlights and upgrading the wiring.
I did some camping up North of Lake Ouachita last 4th of July. My girlfriend and I got lucky and there was a break in the heat for about a week. We camped on the river for about 5 days and it never got over 80 degrees. I grew up in East and West TX and it's never that mild in the summer. We went and dug crystals a couple of days around Hot Springs. Arkansas is a very underrated place. You guys have some awesome places......

You said earlier that you got ~14 mpg and now you get 15. What were you running before? Im thinking about getting those MTs, just wondering how your truck responded to the change in tires.

This is what I had before, plus I changed all the stuff I mentioned before. The bearings in the back really helped. Not to mention the alignment, getting the tires balanced, and then getting it aligned again. It's running smooth on the highway. One finger to keep it in the lane.

I don't have a radio either. So I hear them, but there not to loud. I like them alot. I should probably be running AT's but I'd rather have these when I need them.....

I dropped my truck off on Monday to have a bunch of work done. New cv's, manual hubs, Doug Thorley Headers and magnaflow cats and exhaust, Ebc brake rotors And yellow pads, stainless brake lines, new bearings, changing all the fluids, and regearing to 4.56........

I was reading through some of the responses to this thread and was pretty surprised at the mileage yall are getting on these second gens. My 02 Dodge Quad Cab 1500 with a 4.7 V8 is getting better mileage than what I am seeing! Whats up? Are second gens really that bad or is it more of a tire size\gearing thing that is the problem?

Sorry, should've mentioned that I am getting 17-18 on the highway with a quad in the back and about 14-15 in the city with it. Seeing some of the responses with 13, 15 miles per gallon kind of surprised me. I suppose there are a boatload of variables to each one like gearing and tires but just figured anything would be better than this Dodge.

When I still had the 3.0 in mine, I took a trip from Knoxville to Birmingham and got 23 mpg. That was going at least 10 under the highway speed limit, no A/C, all windows down (it was summer) and very little stop and go traffic. It was all highway.
