Improving off road performance
Hey guys. I'm new the the yotatech world, and the toyota world too. I recently got a 1999 4runner, but its 2wd. My parents brought it home for me as a gift so there is no way i can change that. Any of y'all have ideas for improving my off road performance? I've gone out only a few times and have gotten stuck at least once during all of them. I'll post pics of the 4runner asap. Im also looking into getting new tires. Suggestions? Right now I'm leaning towards KM2's but if anyone has an better ideas feel free to share! Thanks!

i would say your best bet would be to get better tires and slightly wider and taller...
this would be a great tire to get. especially if your not made of money and looking for a good performing M/T. https://treadwright.com/p-61-265-75r...dog-m-t-e.aspx Less than 600$ to your door. https://treadwright.com/images/Product/medium/61.jpg |
Check this thread out, everything you need to know, and already prioritized. :great:

Gears and lockers. Care to elaborate on brands, and how to install them? Or what to look for?
|
i would think to look for a toyota factory e-locker rear end to swap complete if you can.
|
How much would that cost, and how do you do that?
Cause I've never worked on cars before, and I'm trying to learn as much as i can before i attempt any big projects. |
depends. there is an e-locker rear end for sale in the classifieds. it is right at the top. maybe you live close? switching rear axles is pretty simple.
|
I would look for a junked 96-01(?) 4wd. take the front hubs and differentials, trans and tcase. oh and front driveline. The suspension on 4x2 and 4x4 are the same. or also look for a tacoma rear end with the TRD package or a limited 4runner with e locker
|
Yeah, im in central Florida so its rather far away.
So if i find a junked limited with the E-locker, how complicated is the swap? There is no way you can install a LSD or a locker without replacing the entire rear axle? |
The search funtion and google are going to be you best tools for your questions. Since you are in central florida, Im guessing the only thing you will be seeing are mud bogs. You best bet is probably going to be a lockrite for the rear. It will work much much better in the mud than the elocker and is alot cheaper than the elocker so its a win win. Unless you find a free elocker then, dont pass that up. The next option will be tires and suspention lift.

ok....if you have a 2wd the make the best of it.....for more traction, air the tires down to about 12 psi. That will increase traction and smooth out the ride. That also means you will need an air compressor to air them back up.
Wheel with a friend so that they can help you get unstuck. And, have at least one 30 foot stretch strap. That's a start. |
I was looking into the Lockrite before. It's an auto, and i heard that sometimes they chirp when turning alot, and fail easier. Thoughts? Do you have one?
And how the hell would you install one?! Im 16, and just got the car last month, so i'm not sure if i'm going to be able to start replacing axles yet. I've already decided i'm going to make it 4wd as soon as i get out of tech school next year. |

I go with my buddy who has a 2004 F-150 with the fx4 package and he has always been able to pull me out so thats not a problem, i'm just looking for ways to be able to improve my off-roading capabilities so he doesn't have to pull me out so much! xD

How did you install your Aussie lockers, and what exactly do they do?
Thats the most important question, what do they do and why will they help me? Im just trying to learn as much as i can, so i can make an educated derision. |
