Idle 1999 4Runner

1999 4Runner, 250,000 plus miles. In the past 12 months I have had the CEL come on, could not get it into the shop to check it out, then it went off.

Three times in the past 6 months, the vehicle will stall out. This has happen when at idle, when stuck in traffic. It just drops to below the normal idle then dies. Restart no problem.

I decided that I needed to replace air filter, clean air intake from body of carbotator, cleaned with carb cleaner. Put every thing back in place now vehicle is running better, but will not low idle, it's running at high idle (1900 to 2000 RPM) Will not settle back down. In gear with foot on brake idles at 1200 RPM.

What should I do?

Have you ran it around enough to burn off all the cleaner? I know mine will run a high idle for a little bit after I clean it, it might take a day of driving to get it all out of there

sounds like you clogged or dirtied the IAC Valve on the bottom of the throttle body. Get a scanner and check for pending or stored codes.

Ok thanks for the reply, I did do some driving on the freeway for about ten miles or so. No real chage. In the past the idle was always about 900 or so. It seems to be more responsive, however still running at the higher RPMS.

No Scanner, yet did have a rough tme starting after cleaning. CEL came on shortly there after, I had forgot to plug in throttle sensor wire plug, at bass of throttle assembly. I plugged it back in. Turned off engine a couple times then CEL went out. I may have improperly cleaned Air intake, I did see a lot of liquid stuff dropping down the hole inside the air intake, is this where the IAC valve is? I did not removethe sensor it self? should have done this as well? where can I find pictures of all this stuff we are talking about. Not a mechanic. Can't afford one.
