How much ATF for 99 4R 3.4 auto
 

The manual says 2.1 quarts for a trans fluid drain and fill. And my buddy who has 2001 Tacoma says he gets 2.1 quarts out of his truck. However, I just drained over 5 quarts of ATF when I pulled the transmission drain plug!

I need to know how much ATF to put back in. Is anyone familar with this discrepancy? How much should I put back?

1999 4Runner 3.4 auto trans.

Also, the fluid drained into a pan that already had oil in it; so I don't know exactly how much came out. It was about 5.5 quarts?

I have a 99 3.4 and always get right at 5.5 quarts out when I do a drain and fill. I usually put 5 in first and then check the dipstick. Usually end up adding another half quart. Sounds like you are right on.

I poured in 5.25 quarts of Mobil 1 and drove around. It drives great. After the drive, the fluid level shows just above the top/full "hot" tick-mark on the dip-stick.

By the way, that level is just a little bit lower that it was before I drained and filled.
