How do I remove parking brake from back brake drum? '84 Pickup

1984 Toyota truck 2wd, 22r I just tried to change out my rear axle seal and read some tutorials online on how to do it. Seemed easy enough, which it was until I tried to remove my ebrake in order to give me enough room to pull the axle out. All the tutorials I read just talk about unscrewing it from the back wall of the brake drum and thats it, but after I did this the brake spring went into the drum to the lever. The brake spring leading to the lever had a ball on the end of it that looked like it popped out of the lever (almost like a bike brake), but there was no room for me to actually get in there and pop it off, and even if I managed to get it off, it seemed like it would be nearly impossible to get it back on. Am I missing something here? Is there a better way to take of you emergency brake so you can get to the rear axle seal?

Pretty much unhook it from the arm then pull it back out through the backing plate You are talking 2wd Correct.

It can be a real pain the first time

Yeah, it's 2wd.

There is no way to really see how to unhook it, because the lever opening where the ball goes into is facing away. I don't know how I'll ever get back on if I do get it off. Is it common for people to remove other parts of the brake to unhook it to get more room?

Only having done the e-brake cable removing on a rear wheel drive Celica that is pretty much the same set up .

I pull the brakes all apart I didn`t think to say that. Pull the clip off holding the arm to the brake shoe so it is easier to get at.

As long as some one didn`t crush the arm holding the cable it should come free by compressing the spring. lifting the cable up out of the clip This needs to come apart when changing brake shoes.

It is not hard to get the cable out just takes doing it a few times . I take a pair of dykes compress the spring and lift it out Easy to say hard to do the first few times.

Like I said it can be a pain the first time I use a hose clamp to compress the cable to get it started out the backing plate.

Thanks for the info, it turned out to be easier than I expected.

I released the 3 springs that pull both brake shoes together and was able to get in there and pull it out. To put it back on I used a pair of vice grips to pull back the spring that is on the actual ebrake wire, clamp it shut and then have room to get the ball back in there.
