High Steer; What is it? Do I need it?
 

okay so ive been looking at getting new springs for my 85 4runner, and idk what to get, but i wanting 2-3in springs, no idea what brand, and some 5 in shackles in the back, with some 4 in shackles up front. no idea what kind of shocks, probably some ranchos? Now what im wondering is should i go ahead and get a high steer set up before the springs? i know its a weak link in the system, but im a little unsure what the differences are and why its so much better. what changes do you need to make with a high steer setup? i know it requires welding for the new steering box, but is there anything else? im aware that stock for me is "push pull," and the high steer uses cross over, but its kinda greek to me. i know about motors, clueless about suspension. And before you flame on me for not doing research, im in the process, but i figured id make a thread to make it easier.

I would go ahead and lift it first, you may not need high-steer. Kinda depends on what kind of wheeling you do. Butin order to run the hi steer setup you need to lift it first to get enough clearance so that the tie rod doesn't make contact with your springs (since with the high steer setup the tie rod and draglink run above your springs and on the stock setup the tie rod runs underneath the springs). Anyway I would lift it and go from there. You will also need a IFS steering box, probably the frame plate/steering box mounting kit that re-inforces the frame, then what ever hi-steer kit you decide to go with.

Trail Gear is probably the most affordable for lift springs, they make a 3, 4, and 5" lift spring (they also carry shackels, and hi steer) you can get better deals going through a Trail Gear dealer such as Addicted Offroad, Lowrange Offroad, or WabFab depending on where you live and shipping. You need 3" min lift to use high steer.
igh steer is one of the best handling and safety improvements you can make on a 79-85 Toyota.

yeah lol. thanks guys. shortly after posting this i found this in google. couldnt find it in the search, but then again i didnt go through but like the first 7 or so pages of results.

which answered most of my questions, but i did the math and new springs, shackles and high steer would run me like 1000-1300$. so thats a no lol. im just gonna do shackles i think. thanks for the responses by the way!

You can find a high steer kit used for cheap if you look around enough. Got my kit second hand, but had never even bolted for real cheap.
