Help with some of my problems
ok well first off i have a 1988 yota 4runner 22re and im having some overheating problems which i think somethings wrong with my fan/radiator, im not completely sure my fan is spinning and i wanted to know what sort of aftermarket cooling tech there is out there, also today a belt broke that went to the alternator and ive began to overheat even more, what else does that belt go to on my engine? also i think theres a short in my right side headlight because ill be driving and the light will blink on and off, and if it is easy enough to fix, anything would be of great help, thankyou very much :D also i have a snorkel if thats relivant at all :D:saw:

Let's start with the simple things:
1. Replace all the belts and make sure they are tensioned. 2. Looking at your avatar and signature, I would guess you like muddin'. Are the radiator fins packed with mud? 3. Is the coolant full? It's kinda hard to tell looking in the radiator. If there isn't any in the overflow bottle, it's definitely not full. 4. If the coolant was full and in good condition, replace the thermostat. This IS a 20 yr old truck - it's going to require some maintenance |
Good advice above.
Check for leaks, the smallest leak can cause an overheating problem. Overtime radiators start getting clogged if clean water is not used. Don't use tap water in your motor. I use distilled water purchased at the store. If it has never been done you can have your radiator cleaned and rodded out by a radiator shop. That will clean any crap out of the inside that may be restricting flow/ability to cool. And they will repair any leaks. Last time I had it done cost me $50 While your doing that, replace the hoses and you should be good to go. |
If the fan is not spinnging, isn't the water pump not spinning too?
|
i have no idea thats why im asking @_a i havent driven it yet today, but i need to find a shop and then get there as quickly as possible without overheating @_a

The clutch on the fan may not be engaging. Will it get hot driving at highway speeds or just when you stopped or going slow?
|
well since it had been hot already, even when i got on the highway it was getting hot, yet the cold air coming through the front did cool it down a little bit, but also before this happened if i sat in one spot too long without moving and my engine was on, it would start to overheat, that first happened when i was in line at burger ranch one day hah... so where can i get a better fan and stuff...

You should be able to hear the fan if its engaging, kinda of a loud roaring sound when its on then will go quite when its free spinning. If it is your fan you could get just a new clutch for the fan. or go with an electric.
It still could be a thermostat half stuck, water pump on its last leg, crap in the radiator. I would recommend just start troubleshooting with the cheapest parts first. |
