Help me find a good m/t tire
 

Hi. I'm new to this but I need some advice on what kind of tires I should get. I drive a 92 4Runner with a 2" lift and a 3.4 v6 instead of the 3.0 and the 5 speed manual trans. Anyway it is my DD and my trail rig. I live in Alaska so I have mud, rocks, sand, water crosdings, wooded trails, hills, clay, snow and pavement...I am looking at getting the Km2s in 33-10.5R15 and would like to get tires in that size or a similar size and either an m/t or an a/t that handles off-road like an m/t. I would prefer to not go def while driving but a lil hum isnt a big deal. So if there is anyone out there who has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks :)

The KM2s are a great choice.

The Goodyear MTR might also be worth looking it. They have a great tread pattern and people love the Kevlar sidewalls.

Please be careful not to buy "made in China" tires. After I made the mistake of buying them (GT radial 33's) and getting them mounted, the tire shop claims:

1, they can never be balanced
2, they are not even round
3, don't be surprised if they fly apart while you are driving

i have 33 pro comp a/t tires love them cant go wrong!!!

KM2's are IMO the best all arounder mud tire on the road right now. Quiet and well mannered on the road, air em down and they get it pretty well off road. Much better in the wet than the KM1's were.

I've had them all and Nittos are by far my favorite on road tire.
Nitto Terra or Trail Grapplers.

BFG All Terrains are a great choice as well. What they lack on rocks and in mud(still do great) they make up for doubly in snow and ice. Just my .02

they all suck for the mud besides a swamper. the km2s i hated and the mtrs i have were better but not great u wont get a good mud tire unless u buy a tsl

We can throw out tire names all day and it still won't get you anywhere. This is where you have to be TRULY HONEST with yourself and anwser this question "what kind of daily driver do you have" My form of "daily driver" is driven to work every day, then in the evenings and weekends I sink it to the rockers in slop with both diffs locked and my swampers on. The next guys "daily driver" might be driven down a trail 4 times wider than his 2009 4runner 3 times a year with a few rocks and roots and figure its "offroading". Me and this other guy have totally different needs for tires but they are both on our "daily driver"

You have to anwser the above question and be honest with yourself about what tire suits your needs, then start looking from there. In life, everything is a compromise. Tires included. You have to decide which compromises you want to make for your tires.

33x10.50 size is pretty limited. For off road and on pavement in that particular size KM2 will be the best bet.

I know that Interco makes a few tires in that size, but most of their tires wear out quickly on pavement.

It really does come down to your idea of a daily driver.

Alaska is a far cry from New Jersey.

Then how many brands of tires are to be had off the shelf it would not be fun to special order tires wait a few weeks and destroy one the second day you have them.

treadwright.com they make retread tires and have mud terrains called guard dogs also have a kedge grip built in for ice and snow. I had them on my old cummins and will order them for my toyota as well pretty good prices and have had nothing but good luck with them.

i like bfg's. have had good luck with every set i have had, muds, ats, and baja's.
i was gonna go with the km2's but they were not available when i got the safaris on my truck now,similar tread to the km2's like em so far. maybe 10k on em.

i'm curious about these nitto's wabbit keeps talking about. like to check them out, maybe next tire.

Thank you all so much for your help ...I also wasn't sure if I would have to regear my 4runner if I put 33 in tires on it so would I have to or would it be fine with stock gears

33x10.5 km2s are amazing tires man. For what you've explained I would say you will never be disappointed in the km2s. I would just go for them. As for the gears, if you've got the funds it would be in your best interest to upgrade to 4.56 or even 4.88s, but considering you have the 3.4 in there, your power problems aren't the same as us 22re guys.

I have 33x10.50x15s on my '84. 4" lift. They are quiet and wear very well. I travel for work so I put in a 3RZ and can do 80mph all day long, and i do it frequently. I have approx 20k miles on mine and they literally have almost no wear. I get off the road and on the trails occasionally so that's why I went with KM2s. The A/Ts seem to clog up way to fast in any kind of mud, in my opinion.
And in regards to noise, I hear wind noise way louder than my tires. Slight, slight hum, and road surfaces affect that a little bit. They are not silent, but for the tread design, they are amazingly quiet.

They are not siped, so I don't know how you feel about that, being in Alaska. You could get it done by a tire shop that offers it though.

And Toyo also makes a 33x10.50 in their M/T Open Country. That was my 1st choice, but they were on back order and I needed tires right away... So the KM2s won... I love them.
