Door lock knob mystery

Have a 1988 Toyota Pickup Base Standard Cab Pickup 2-Door 2.4L. The front door lock knob has the bottom end of a screw sticking up right next to it which prevents the guide/link/surround thingy that goes around it from being snapped into place. Any idea why that screw would be there? Can I just pull on the door lock knob to remove it and see if maybe that upside down screw is supposed to be inside it? Bugs me that the surround thingy just sits there loosely and I know eventually I will lose it.

Brand new newbie and read all the newbie stuff so apologies if I'm not supposed to start a thread but I've been searching for days and have found nothing either here or general searches. Did learn how to change my windshield washer arm via this forum though! ;)

Welcome!

I have never taken my door panel or lock assembly out so I do not know if there is supposed to be a screw in that area.

Can you post a picture?

If on a computer, you can upload photos this way: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f122...loader-301179/

I am not sure how to upload photos using the mobile version, but should be sort of similar.

Thank you!

Just a laptop here.. Young mechanics here in town don't know a lot about these old trucks, so I've learned a lot reading here. Love being able to work on it myself.

Got photo to upload but don't see insert button on top, just upload. Will try dragging it. Nope that didn't work. Sorry. The screw is upside down -- meaning the part visible is the blunt end of a threaded screw. Sticks up about 1/8" just to the right of the lock knob.

The "upload" button takes the place of the older "Insert" button when the tutorial was created. Both do the same.

The background of the photo uploader has changed to from white to black too....

Just got done replacing some stuff in my doors and no, I do not see any reason a screw would be interfering with the plastic tube that the lock mechanism goes through, maybe someone screwed something in the door at some point for an unknown reason....

Originally the plastic trim ring around the lock plunger has two tabs that are melted from the factory to snug to the door panel, maybe someone tried to put a screw in it from the underside to keep it in place.

Thats actually what I was replacing, got a brand new set on eBay for 24 bucks.

Yup, that’s exactly what they did now I see your pic:)

Ah. Thank you. So I guess I would have to take the door panel off to get to the screw to see what they did. I got a new lock knob and piece that surrounds it but it's not the right one for my truck. The posts are much thicker than the little round post kind I need. It was only $7. and indicated it would fit my truck. Later I called Toyota dealership and got the part number for the one for my truck by VIN #. Looked it up and it's totally different than the one I got on ebay. The one I need is closer to the price you paid. Not avail. through Toyota -- discontinued. But found it on ebay. Might not order it as it's probably not gonna work anyways until I figure out how to get that screw out.

The screw should be easy once you get the panel off BUT by looking at your pic I do not see the plastic channel that the rod goes through, they usually disintegrate and just flop around, this also causes the ring to break and push out because it isn’t moving freely. If in fact that plastic piece is not intact I would try to source them before going through the hassle of pulling the panels off so you can do it all at once,

Not sure if they are available or what they are called let me search a bit:)

By rod do you mean the knob that moves up and down to lock or unlock the door? Or a different piece that the knob is supposed to come through? The ring around the knob snaps into the one hole you can see, but because the other hole is filled with that screw, there is no way to snap it in on that side. Knowing what all these little parts are called is the hardest part in finding them! Thanks for helping!

Thank you! The website shows this fits from 1989 to 1995. But at least now I know what it's called!

You can see how they disintegrate, so the clear plastic tube goes in the hole from the top in your pic and holds by the tab that is half gone which holds the knob in place so it’s smooth up and down:) if that makes sense.

Of course it does. I had no idea of this little thing. Searching now. Thank a heep! It it boggles my brain too much I may just live with it for now. Heh.

JenMarie 10-17-2018 06:22 PM

Wait. Are you saying that little piece just drops down into the hole where the lock knob is? So I would just pull the lock knob out and insert that piece, then push the lock knob down into it? Naw. couldn't be that simple! LOL!!

Discombobulated 10-17-2018 06:26 PM

I just looked at an 88 door parts diagram and I do not see that plastic piece in the diagram so I guess disregard my advice:) sorry but I had fun posting I guess!!!

I did mean the plastic piece drops in the door itself then you put the door panel back on, but as said above I don’t see that piece in the 88 diagram which is odd, maybe that’s why they added it?

LOL! It's not a big deal but just one of those things that I know will bug me until I figure it out. Thank you for all your help!
