Best gears for 33x12.50s?
So I have an 87 Toyota single cab short bed with a 22R. Im running 33x12.50/15 BFG KM2s on no lift but soon to do about 2-3"
What gears would be best? 4.88s or 5.29s? |
Only goooogle knows....but seriously there's a BUNCH of helpful threads...even stickied threads about gears....:bigok:

Searching is your best friend. With that being said.... If you plan on going up to 35's or bigger, run 5.29's... If your keeping 33's and no bigger, stick with 4.88's because with 5.29's you'll be running high rpms with less gas mileage. |
5.29's and don't look back.

Depending on if your lifting and wheeling it, or lifting for looks and daily driving. |
or 5.29's if your an auto trans and 4.88's if your a manual.

Im lifting for tire clearance. Wheeled not too often and its a daily driver. Also a 5spd.
|
When you do the rear you need to do the front too right?
|
Also where can I find a set? I found a few websites that sell rears but not fronts...then sites that sell both but no prices.
|
Yes, both the front and the rear diffs need to be the same gear ratio. If they're not your drive train will bind when you engage 4WD because the front wheels will be turning at a different ratio than the rears.
|
ok....I can find rear ring a pinion sets all over the place but cant track down a front set.
|
you can buy complete built diffs from these guys:

Those 8" ring and pinion sets....will they fit front too? Cause I can only find FJ and 05+ IFS sets.
|
This is what you will want for the front end.

Like you, mine's a 5 speed and daily driver. I take it for the occasional offroad trip, but NOT a rock crawler. I installed 4.88's to turn my 33x12.50's and am very pleased. Would definitely do the same again.
Bojangles is right on. If you're not rock crawling, you don't need 5.29 gears |
